Brothers Kangaroos Australian Football Club’s junior teams will soon be able to play home games on Friday nights with lighting to be upgraded at its headquarters, Rockhampton’s Kele Park.

The club has received $335,000 for the project in Round 1 of the Queensland Government’s $100 million Resources Community Infrastructure Fund.

More than $7 million from RCIF has been allocated to the city, with $3.1 million going to selectability to deliver the new Rockhampton Mental Wellbeing Safe Haven and $4.5 million to the Rockhampton Regional Council to redevelop the Mount Morgan Aquatic Centre.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Infrastructure Steven Miles recently visited Kele Park to announce the funding.

Brothers Kangaroos’ president Cameron Wyatt said the upgraded lighting was an exciting development for the club and the benefits would be fourfold.

“This funding will enable us to provide a safe environment for training at night and provide the opportunity for night games for our senior men’s and women’s teams,” he said.

“It also means the club can introduce a youth girls team into the Saturday competition and our juniors - our under-7.5s, 9.5s and 11.5s - will be able to play at home on Friday nights instead of having to travel to other grounds.”

Wyatt said trenching works would start in the new year but due to delays in materials as a result of Covid-19, the club was working towards having the lighting completed later in 2022.
