A trough connected to a weather system bearing down on New South Wales could bring thunderstorms back to South East Queensland this week.

It comes after a weather system and a southeasterly change that moved towards the coast, triggered severe storm activity in the Border Ranges and the Scenic Rim on Saturday.

The severe weather saw rainfall between 20mm and 40mm recorded in parts of the Border Ranges where the bulk of the storm activity took place.

Senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology Felim Hanniffy said the southeasterly wind surge has brought inclement weather to the southeast for Sunday.

“It has brought plenty of cloud and some shower activity this morning,” Mr Hanniffy said.

“The shower activity should start to break up around the south-east as we head into the afternoon.

‘The southeasterly wind surge that moved up along the southeast coast overnight and early this morning is going to move northwards towards parts of the northeast of the state we go through the rest of today and into tomorrow.”

Mr Hanniffy added that any potential thunderstorms in western Queensland today may be gusty, especially in the far west.

“If we do see severe storms in western Queensland, damaging winds would be probably the main hazard,” he said.

Mr Hanniffy added that a weather system currently out west could bring storms to the southeast by the middle of the week.

“Today, that weather system is going to generate showers and storms through parts of the west and southern tier today,” Mr Hanniffy said.

“Now some of that trough could drift east in towards parts of the south-east come during Tuesday and Wednesday.

“There is a bit of uncertainty just how that weather system will move, but it could bring the chance of thunderstorms back into parts of the south-east, particularly as we go towards the middle of this week.”
