Police Commissioner confirms Crash teen was bailed over ‘traffic matter’

Qld Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll has confirmed the teen charged over the Alexandra Hills double tragedy was on bail for a ‘traffic matter’ he would not have been remanded for.

POLICE Commissioner Katarina Carroll has confirmed that the 17-year-old boy who allegedly ran down Kate Leadbetter and her partner Matty Field was on bail for a “traffic matter”, as she indicated that he had “criminal matters” that were “dealt with some time ago”.

Ms Carroll this morning said she was “constrained” to talk about the teenager because he was a juvenile.

Katarina Carroll has confirmed the 17-year-old boy who allegedly ran down Kate Leadbetter and her partner Matty Field was on bail for a “traffic matter.

But she did reveal the alleged offender had been on bail for a “traffic matter”, saying it was something that people would not be remanded for.

“I need to be really, really correct about this,” Ms Carroll said.

“I’m constrained to talk about the individual obviously because that person’s a juvenile.

“And their criminal matters were dealt with some time ago. So the criminal matters were dealt with.

“And then there was a traffic matter that the bail related to – a traffic matter where people ... would not be remanded for.”

Ms Carroll said officials needed to “get to the facts”.

Matty Field and Kate Leadbetter were killed in Alexandra Hills while walking their dogs.

“We are going back into the history to look at what else should be done, could be done and what we need to learn from and what we need to change for the future,” she said.

“There are moments in time that tragedies happen and I’m hoping that we can go back and learn from it.

“I can understand why people are angry. It’s hard to understand how this can happen.”

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk also said officials needed to get to the bottom of the matter and “get the facts right” as she vowed to take action if changes were needed.

“Like I said, we all want answers, the community wants answers,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“There will be a thorough police investigation and of course there will be a coronial inquest.”
