IT’S the mystery of a pig named Kevin Bacon, a shampoo-like smell and the glow of headlights on a dead-end road.
A Toowoomba family is at a loss to explain what happened to their beloved pet pig after he turned up in the middle of the night following a four-day hiatus.
Vanessa Hayes took to social media after discovering Kevin Bacon-Hayes – who has his own Facebook page – had disappeared from the family acreage.
She told The Courier-Mail she assumed Kevin Bacon (named after the omnipresent film star) had been sleeping somewhere shady when she didn’t see him on Monday.
But come evening, when he would usually be following her around demanding her undivided attention, she feared the worst and went searching.
“Kevin absolutely wouldn’t wander off, he loves company and attention,” Ms Hayes said.
She described Kevin Bacon as “man’s best friend”, particularly for her husband, an ex-service veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Ms Hayes said her husband’s companionship with the family pig had proven more successful than any other form of therapy.
She said a social media campaign calling on Toowoomba locals to keep an eye out for Kevin Bacon drew lots of attention.
Then, four days after he disappeared, the pig made a sudden return in the middle of the night – shiny of coat and smelling of shampoo.
Ms Hayes said she saw the headlights of a car she believes dropped Kevin Bacon at her house.
“(He) carried on like a pork chop, he was so happy to see us,” she said.
Kevin Bacon – who is usually odourless as pigs do not have sweat glands – was clean and smelt like perfume. The family is puzzled over the unusual circumstance of his disappearance but Ms Hayes said: “I don’t care how he went missing or how he came back, I’m just so happy he’s home.”
