How long have you lived in Noosa?
Just Over 20 years , I moved here with my wife and 3 boys.
If elected, what are your top three priorities?
1. Get Council back to Basics - making sure that all essential services are the best they can be.
2. Try to help small business by reducing bureaucratic red tape and listening to them.
3. Make Council more approachable, transparent and more accountable to the residents and ratepayers.
What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
I have owned and operated my own real estate business over 20 years .
I have employed locals for the entire time and as I travel extensively throughout the Shire, I do speak to residents and ratepayer and have a very good handle of what people are thinking re the Council.
I do own property in the Noosa Shire.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
No. I believe an audit of our roads should be conducted if it hasn't already been done and then prioritise what needs attention.
Also , response times to road maintenance needs to be looked at.
I notified Council of a damaged guard rail just north of Castaways Beach. It took months and months to be repaired.
What connections to local businesses do you have? Do you think business interests should be placed above resident interests?
Council's own reports state clearly the Tourism and small business underpin our economy.
There will be no winner if you pit residents interests against business interests.
We need to have a balanced and common sense approach when any issue arises that effect these groups.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaigning?
My wife and I previously ran charity events to raise money for Noosa Life Education.
Also, I have donated my time on many occasions as a guest auctioneer at various charity functions over the years.
Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
I am a "true" Independent" candidate who is self - funding his own campaign.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
I have run my own business in Noosa for over 20 years and I am still operating .
I have been through the Pilots Strike and The GFC and I am still here.
I bring strong business and communication skills that I believe the residents and ratepayers would expect of a councillor who will be looking after and administrating their hard earned ratepayer dollars.
How many of my opponents can demonstrate the same set of skills?

No I would not be treating an appointment as a part time job if successful.

In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
Noosa is an iconic location, our environment is our Jewel in the Crown and must be maintained.
No high rises, only sensible development where deemed appropriate by way of the town plan. Decision making backed by evidence and common sense .
The fabric of Noosa needs to be maintained.
Snezana Redford (Councillor candidate)
How long have you lived in Noosa?
I have lived in Noosa for just over a year, we have holidayed here for 15 years with always a vision of calling this beautiful part of the world home one day.
If elected, what are your top three priorities?
Providing more financial support for wildlife rescuers and carers. Reintroduce cat registration, directing funds to manage cat populations. Actively lobby the State Government to replace shark nets and trial new non-lethal technologies such as detection drones What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond? None in Queensland apart from family home. Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads? There will always be a need to maintain and upgrade existing roads as required. This should be done in a manner that accommodates the safe movements of our precious wildlife.
What connections to local businesses do you have? Do you think business interests should be placed above resident interests?
No business connections.
No they shouldn't, there needs to be a balance between residential and business needs.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaigning?
I am a Lifeline Crisis Support Volunteer and I also volunteer at a Farm Animal Sanctuary.
I am the regional coordinator for The Animal Justice Party which is a volunteer position.
Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
The Animal Justice Party is funding my campaign along with the seven other party candidates in Queensland. Yes we are happy to list donors.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
I have held positions that require dealing with the public in the insurance and banking sector possessing effective communication skills.
As part of the Animal Justice Party I have gained experience in dealing with environmental and animal issues, also understanding how businesses can be developed that will protect the environment and animals.
Will you be treating a council job as part time whilst maintaining alternative employment?
No, I am currently in the my third of my Psychology degree, however if I was to be elected I would reduce my study commitments so I could concentrate on my Council duties.
In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
It is fantastic that Noosa is leading the way by declaring a climate emergency, now the work must start to find effective solutions to mitigating the climate change impacts.
Yanni Van Zijl (Councillor candidate)
How Long have you lived in Noosa?
22 years ago my husband Peter and I decided there would be no better place than Noosa to raise a family. My two children Vincent (21) and Sophia (19) were born here and have grown up in Noosa.
If elected, what are your top three priorities?
1. Responsible spending and limiting increases in rates to matching the CPI.
2. Our natural environment and ensuring that future development adheres to sustainable environmental standards and the provisions in the Noosa Plan
3. Balancing the needs of residents with those of tourism. I support the provisions in the New Noosa Plan that limits the expansion of short term letting of whole house accommodation in Low Density Residential zones.
What business, residential and investments interests do you have locally and beyond?
We have our home and a few shares.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain roads?
Issues of demand, usage and safety must be considered to determine which roads need priority. There is always room for improvement.
What connections to local business do you have? Do you think business interests should be placed above resident interests?
Business is essential, as is the amenity of local residents, one is not more important than the other, we rely on the interaction of the two working in conjunction to find a balance. Many of our business operators are local residents, that is the beauty of being a part of this community.
Occasionally I facilitate environmental art classes to school children within our shire, sell art work through Noosa Open Studios, and have been a freelance photographer for 14 years, so I understand the needs of small business.
Who is funding your campaign?
I am self -funded. Should I receive donations I will publicly declare them.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
I am a creative person with 20 years' experience in owning and managing successful businesses including a fashion label, photography business, and a student environmental art education program.
Most recently I have collaborated with fellow artist Pam Walpole creating site specific ART installations with environmental messages.
These all required critical creative thinking and problem-solving, sound communication, budgeting, integrity, understanding and organisational skills.
I have volunteered weekly for 14 years in Noosa with Noosa Bush Beach and Creek care to rehabilitate seriously degraded natural areas. Collectively our volunteer labour together with Federal, Government and Local grants we have donated $1,000,000 value to the Noosa Shire.
I also volunteer my photographic services to Noosa Arts theatre for their promotional material.
Together with Peter, my husband we co-ordinate Clean up Australia Day for Sunshine Beach.
Will you be treating a council job as a part-time while maintaining alternative employment?
I will dedicate myself full time to this roll.
In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
Noosa has previously benefitted from planning principles that has set us apart from other shires. It is what we don't have that makes us different, roundabouts, few traffic lights, reduced signage and height restrictions in buildings as well as a commitment to not have massive population growth. Our communities together with Council have also been great protectors and guardians of our natural assets.
The newly drafted Noosa Planning scheme is designed with a focus on environmental protection and sensitive human development to protect the Noosa lifestyle we love.
They have led by example by installing Solar to council buildings. They are working toward a Zero emissions target for 2026 and have prepared a response to climate change. They are promoting digital tech as a future industry.
Karen Cook-Langdon (Councillor candidate)
How long have you lived in Noosa?
18 years, first in Pomona for 5 years and 13 years in Noosa Heads. From my own experiences I have a deep, personal understanding of both hinterland and coastal issues and will be meeting residents in order to represent their interests in council.
If elected, what are your top three priorities?
Employment. Sustaining local employment particularly in the existing tourism industry and creating more local employment opportunities - supporting initiatives for new businesses, environmental support industries and working with community groups to establish social-enterprises.
Community. Re-establishing trust between the Noosa community and their council by strengthening communication and engagement processes. Community opinions and knowledge must be a priority in council.
Sustainability. Our natural environment is our greatest asset. As a council we need to support and inspire change regarding sustainable living for residents and visitors alike. I am inspired by the idea of being part of a leading 'green tourist industry'.
What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
I have been working in our Noosa Heads business from 2006. We created a collective ownership group to buy a management rights business and we employed one staff managing one resort, now we employ 50 locals and support hundreds of families providing services to our small part in Noosa's tourism industry. We have been responsible for creating capital raising groups where we presently manage three management rights buildings and a property management business.
I am also a unitholder and manager of property trusts that own commercial buildings in Noosa Junction. These commercial buildings were previously vacant and have now been revitalised, tenanted and are now contributing to the local community and economy. Fully carbon neutral; we have installed a total of 80KWH of solar panels.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
As a person who has lived in the hinterland and on the coast, it is of vital importance that there is a balance between all forms of infrastructure investment, including roads, across the whole of the Shire.
There are two issues that the new Council must discuss. Firstly, the Noosa Transport Strategy and it's effective implementation and secondly, Council's core role in maintaining safe roads and to carefully scrutinize infrastructure spending.
What connections to local businesses do you have? Do you think business interests should be placed above resident interests?
I am a co-owner of management rights and a property management business in Noosa Heads, that employs 50 locals.
Business interests and residents' interests are not exclusive to one another. Residents want to be able to be employed in their local area. One cannot function without the other.
Noosa needs a sustainable economy and we also need safe and pleasurable community amenities.
We need to ensure we have a diversified economy and dynamic community that support local businesses, and I will lend my expertise to achieving that goal.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaigning?
Treasurer Pomona State School P&C Assoc 2003 - mid 2006, Treasurer Sharks Soccer Club 2012 - 2016, Treasurer Sunshine Beach State School P&C Association 2017 - current, Green Drinks Noosa - bringing environmental organisations together, Karuna Palliative Care 1998 - 2000, New Farm Neighbourhood Centre committee 1998 - 2000, New Farm Reconciliation Action Group - 2000
Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
I am self-funding, and will be happy to disclose any contributions that may be made.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
I believe that the combination of my financial and business management skills will be of benefit to a new Council. I have a depth of experience in working with groups in achieving positive outcomes.
I am able to understand, manage and report on budgets and work with teams as a good communicator and leader.
My commitment to community service and my long- standing dedication to education around environmental sustainability and protection will also be assets to a new Council.
Will you be treating a council job as part time whilst maintaining alternative employment?
I will leave my position as CFO of our businesses to dedicate my time 100% to serving the Noosa community.
I am nominating because I believe Noosa needs an entirely new council. I am interested in using the information and resources that we have available to inform decisions and to make living in the entire Noosa Shire a better experience for residents and visitors.
In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
Noosa is well resourced with a community of creative, innovative business people who I believe need to be supported in their efforts to create a diverse pool of job opportunities.
We also do really well with respect to cultivating an environment where arts and culture are valued and respected.
Until there are other viable employment options on a significant scale, Noosa needs tourism and the trickle-down effect of the tourism dollar to sustain the lifestyle that we enjoy here. Our tourism industry needs to continue being environmentally responsive and promote new initiatives that support 'zero-emissions'.
Phil Moran (Councillor candidate)
1/ How long have you lived in Noosa?
30 years
2/ If elected, what are your top three priorities?
Fiercely protecting Noosa's Planning Scheme and its recent history of low-key development without high-rise, excessive advertising, traffic lights and other 'big city' symbols.
Supporting a balanced, innovative approach to our future, encouraging conservation of private land, more solar uptake, water saving and vegetation retention.
Supporting and diversifying the Noosa economy and creating new, sustainable jobs while protecting our strong environmental credentials.
3/ What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
Nature Refuge with house in Cooran with my wife - mortgage - nothing else. Oh, I have one chicken and a Labrador.
4/ Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
Yes. It is fine to have goals, however Council is a business with a budget that should be adhered to. We have to be fair and equitable is deciding where scare revenue is distributed. More spent in one area means less spent in another.
5/ What connections to local businesses do you have? Do you think business interests should be placed above resident interests?
I have worked for a not for profit business in Noosa for 20 years, Noosa Landcare, where I am currently General Manager. We always try to spend money locally supporting business. All local business including hinterland have my support. The interests of business and residents are intertwined. Business owners are residents too!
6/ What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaign?
Member of many community and environment groups. I currently serve on board of the peak Natural Resource Management Group in Qld. Secretary of Healthy Land & Water one of the two Regional Bodies for Noosa for past 3 years. Board member of Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Network. Community sector boards years ago with Noosa Council - Inaugural chair of Environment Board. Deputy Chair of Noosa Biosphere Ltd - 3 years
7/ Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
Self-funded. It is a legal requirement to disclose donors
8/ What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
30 years' experience in Noosa actively working with the environment and the community. Noosa Landcare has a payroll of over 40 employees. Trained in Hospitality management. I owned and operated a Gourmet food and Catering business in Brisbane for 8 years at a time of 18% interest.
9/ Will you be treating a council job as part time while maintaining alternative employment?
For the first six months I will put all my effort into learning procedures and protocols. I may do some limited consulting for one day per week IF I am up to speed. Council would be my main focus.
10/ In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
Protecting our environment - however we need to be vigilant to maintain what we have, and increase protected areas. We owe a lot to the foresight of the people who have come before us who protected Noosa, and made it the place we all want to live. Conservation on Private land is a good, affordable option.
A Tourism sector that vales our environment, led by Tourism Noosa, its members and Council working together.
A community that stands together in tough times.
Noosa is special, I will strive to keep it that way.
Tom Wegener (Councillor candidate)
How long have you lived in Noosa?
I've lived in Noosa for 21 years and became an Australian citizen in 2006.
If elected, what are you three priorities?
Professional: Use my skills as a lawyer and academic to thoroughly read and assess the reports and information provided through council and in addition, do my own research to address issues to a high standard.
Environmental: to respect and appreciate Noosa's unique history and uphold the Noosa plan to a strict standard.
Economical: working to extend tourism and the business sector in Noosa shire, alleviating pressure from central Noosa by spreading opportunities throughout the hinterland.
What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
I own my house in Cooroy and Tom Wegener Surfboards which has been a local Noosa business for 20 years.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
Noosa shire has some of the best roads in the state by a far stretch. Safe roads and transport networks are important and we need to have solid plans for future transport management as I see it diversifying and becoming greener and cleaner.
What connections to local businesses do you have?
While I am only invested in my own surfboard manufacturing company, I both support and rely on a large web of businesses in Noosa such as Boatcraft Pacific, Noosa Longboards, The Bunker and many others. It is a core value of mine to support local industry in order to keep money circulating around the Noosa economy. In Noosa, the dividing line is not between business in general and residents. Most Noosa residents, like me, are involved in small business and have interests concerning their work and their residence. To me, the dividing line is between big business and local small business owners. I will prioritise local industry and locals over outsider big business.
What community and volunteering activities have you engaged in prior to your election campaigning?
I've regularly guest-lectured at our local high schools, NDSHS and Sunshine Beach, in support of their personal development programs. I participate in several volunteer programs at the Sunshine Coast University and have been actively involved with the Noosa Festival of Surfing for many years. Within our surfing community I support various arts festivals including the Noosa Surf Film Festival. I am excited to contribute to the community in a much larger capacity through the Council.
Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
My campaign is self-funded, but I would never take a donation that I would not feel comfortable listing publicly. In the case that I receive donations, I will list all donors.
What relevant experience have you had that qualified you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
As an environmental attorney in Southern California, I learned how inferior council can become if compromises are made with public space. I understood the nuances of regulation and how it works best and was astounded by the quality of governance in Noosa upon my arrival. For example, the long foreshore at Gympie Terrace with barbecues and recreational areas and the Noosa National Park would never exist in regulation-free California. I can see that this raises the standard of living for every Noosa resident. Through my PhD in small industry manufacturing, I learned how small businesses work sustainably in Australia and the conditions required to encourage local industry. I will draw on this knowledge to protect Noosa's unique, self-reliant economy.
Will you be treating a council job as part time while maintaining alternative employment?
I'll still be making surfboards. Every morning, I'll still be in my shed listening to Rob Blackmore cover the local weather and news, but it's more of a meditation than work. Aside from that, the Council will be my full-time occupation.
In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
I spend a lot of time with foreigners visiting Noosa and they basically consider it the garden of Eden. Noosa attracts these like-minded tourists which support our local economy. We are leading the way in sustainable thinking, climate action, eco-tourism, surfing - the list is very long. I will continue this style of governance and find innovative ways to maintain these principles as technologies advance and challenges arise.
Janet Kake (Councillor candidate)
How long have you lived in Noosa?
I lived in Eumundi when I was born, went to Eumundi State School. For the past 17 years I have lived on the Cooroy Mountain on 43 acres and also have a home in Tewantin that my Grandparents built in 1980.
If elected, what are your top three priorities?
1. JOBS: My first priority, if elected, would be to concentrate on creating more jobs for Noosa. Presently Noosa Council is our largest employer. Tony mentioned recently that the majority of these jobs are filled by people from out of our Shire. My role would then be to filter to our Business Community to employ locally. I have already been working on this throughout the year as President of the Noosa Chamber of Commerce.
2.YOUTH and supporting the transition from school to the work place is and has been for many years, my passion. I believe the mental health of our kids is fragile especially with drugs easily on hand, and if we concentrate on helping them to find their direction through traineeships which is working one day per week at a workplace instead of school, we will have happier kids… and parents. This system alone supports our kids financial freedom, independence from their parents, confidents within themselves, stronger mental health, experience in the workplace prior to leaving school making for ease of employment after school and many more positive youths in our community.
3. ENVIRONMENT: The protection of our environment is crucial as clean air, water and land is crucial for the health and wellbeing of our residents, animals and sea life going forward. I want feel free to let my Grandchildren swim in our river system and walk barefoot in the bush and drink our water without boiling it. I believe water is like gold and the future of water's health may be at risk. We have amazing resources in our Shire and to grow good food is to start with we need clean land, air and water. I love the freshness of our local food and want to support more alternative economy in this area.
What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
I own two properties, 43 acres on Cooroy Mountain and a home in Tewantin. I run a solar farm, horse and cattle agistment. I am a rental manager for family, friends and myself and sell the occasional property for family and friends who ask me to help. I write business systems then train and implement these systems into companies. I am a keynote speaker, and event co-ordinator. A lot of my income is derived from passive income so I am available to give my full attention to the people of Noosa.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
I have a home on a dirt road and know the frustrations of trying to get a road sealed through council. If elected I would do all I can to communicate with the public on this and ensure I do everything possible to move forward on the individual complaints.
What connections to local businesses do you have? Do you think business interests should be placed above resident interests?
I am the President of the Noosa Chamber of Commerce since November 2018 so I absolutely know the Noosa Business concerns. Our business people are mostly small business people, a lot with families who strive to pay the bills as they love to live in Noosa. I am passionate about eliminating this believe that it is business owners against residents. They are one in the same page and my goal is to bridge this gap so we can get on as a community to make the right decisions for everyone, win/win, not win/lose. If elected my goal is to improve the Culture in Noosa for us to be one, not divided in our Community.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaigning?
I am Sargent at Arms in the Rotary Club of Cooroy and have enjoyed this for the past almost two years. We just gave our local fire stations $12,000 and donate a lot more money to local charities from our hard work. It is very rewarding. I have been involved in the Australian Light Horse Association for the past five years and on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day and some local schools, you will see me in the Tewantin and Cooroy Parades usually with my best mate Arnie, a standard bred, whom I started riding 16 years ago. I am President of the Noosa Chamber of Commerce and in the past year we have grown memberships to over four times the amount. We have monthly catch ups of over 100 people each time, meet with the Mayor monthly to discuss Noosa Business and much more. I will stay as President as long as my Committee allows until the election so I know it is on track for 2020. If elected I will stand down as President.
CANCER COUNCIL. I have raised a lot of money through events, many at Noosa, for the Cancer Council. After having breast cancer three times I am focused on supporting people with health issues. My health is clear and the experience has only made me a stronger, more compassionate person who appreciates family, friends, and communities.
Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
I am self-funding but if anyone decides to contribute to my campaign I will absolute publicly list the donors.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
In my working experience I have always been a leader either of teams, companies, events, and been involved closely with town planners, business systems, team building, contractual law, negotiation, keynote speaking and am very strong work ethics. I am passionate about life, people and our land. I also work with traineeships and support people finding jobs, my strongest passion being youth and supporting their transition from school to the workforce. I am 55 years old and feel I have a lot to offer my Community with experience, dedication and passion for our people, land and environment. In my early 20s I went into insurance and became number one in Australia focusing on the Army, Airforce and Police as my clients. At age 30 I started my own real estate agency, buying a building in Toowong and employing 40 people taking over Brisbane. My role was to write, train and implement sales systems, new business, and much more. This created strong team work, culture and a happy environment.
Will you be treating a council job as part time whilst maintaining alternative employment?
If elected I will give 100% plus to my role as Councillor and the Community. As mentioned most of my present interest, income are passive and the last year as President of the Noosa Chamber has given me an insight into the makings of Council, Business, Residents and our Environment. I feel like I am part of our soil as my ancestors now are and this is the reason I want to ensure we look after Noosa for our kids future.
In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
I believe Noosa is leading the way in many areas, one is town planning, ensuring our heights of buildings do not rise, the buildings fit in to our landscape and we do not start to look like the Gold Coast, thanks to the past Councillors and Mayors. It is important this does not change and continues to be monitored with the right people on Council to ensure positive growth in infrastructure. Noosa Council has also backed solar and added panels to all their buildings, as are the residents and commercial buildings. This is a way of the future for now. We are leading the way from the quality of the food we grow, to the quality and variety of the restaurants we have in our small Community. We are blessed to have people who care enough to lead the way in their industry. Noosa is also leading the way in its projects like the Peregian Hub ensuring that we are attracting people who work from home and live in Noosa.
Patrick Lloyd (Councillor candidate)
How long have you lived in Noosa?
My family moved here in 1979 when I was 5, however I also spent 10 years living in Japan.
If elected, what are your top three priorities?
Bring back the money - enough of wasting ratepayer funds on failed green projects. Millions of dollars wasted on throwing old oyster shells in the river along with buying pine forest leases for koalas. Half million dollar interest free loans to the Noosa Parks Association. The biosphere is nothing more than an opportunity to give money to mates.
Fight for small business - I ran in the 2016 election after experiencing over time a council culture that was becoming more and more unaccountable. Make Noosa Fun Again - Nothing highlights the current council's attitude toward successful community initiatives more than the closure of Briteside and the Tip Shop. Briteside was an award winning and profitable local recycling initiative set up by the Noosa Community Training Centre with the Noosa Council in 2000 that employed 11 permanent staff plus admin. Briteside was shutdown by the casting vote of Tony Wellington in mid 2018.
What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
I have a house in Cooroibah, and my wife and I run the 'Sushi Monster' in Noosaville. Until the end of November 2019 I ran a beach horse riding business called 'Noosa Horses' on the North Shore which I closed in order to focus on the coming election.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
When the council can waste $2.4 million on a failed oyster reef fiasco as well as hand out to no end of money for mates programs through the NBRF then the answer can only be No!

While the Council and the Noosa News love to play identity politics, in an attempt to separate the two, most people in Noosa either run a business or work for one. However I'm more concerned by the council placing the needs of special interest groups above the residents.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaigning?
I do what I can as opportunities come up and over the years both the Sushi Monster and Noosa Horses have made donations to various community groups.

The Noosa community is leading the way in it's desire for change, and in wanting a whole new council that is accountable and isn't directed by outside influences.The Noosa council is leading the way in reality TV, child sex offences and general dysfunctionality.

My family and I arrived on the Sunshine Coast over 10 years ago and have lived in the Noosa area for the last seven of those. I actually came to Noosa my second day off the plane and my heart was immediately captured and we were frequent visitors even before moving here for good.

We are currently renting a home in the Sunrise Beach area and have no current investments - though we are hoping to be able to eventually purchase a property in the hinterland where we can live our dream of helping preserve habitat for koalas and other native species while still being in proximity of a local town centre for community!
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
As our roads in and around the shire are a mix of state and local responsibility I'm certain we can do more by promoting enhanced communication and collaboration with all concerned. It's an important area of focus as we anticipate both growth in and increased visitors to the Hinterland communities in particular.
An additional consideration might be reducing wear and tear on our roads with increased alternative transport options. I found the free bus service over the holiday period to be a pleasure to use and would like to explore increasing and expanding this service.

I'm a frequent patron of a number of our local business and but have no special connections. I plan to represent the interests of both business owners and residents equally as they are serve each other.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaigning?
I was a co-founder and President of Queensland Koala Crusaders (I've stepped aside to focus on being a voice for the whole community now) as well as stage manager and performer with Noosa Arts Theatre and Noosa Alive/Noosa Long Weekend. One of my proudest recent volunteer moments was helping to organise the funding to plant over 24,000 trees in the Ringtail/Yural forest region - including a community planting day.

My campaign so far has been self-funded and while I am hopeful of receiving support I will not accept donations from anyone I would not be prepared to list publicly.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
In addition to building and creating highly successful environmental and human health focused not-for-profits in both the US and Australia, I have worked for many years in a variety of businesses around the world in both contracted and self-employed roles - including intensive care nursing, midwifery, childbirth education, photography/videography and most recently light manufacturing.

This role and the people of Noosa deserve nothing less than a full time commitment and that's what I will deliver.

As someone who has lived and worked around the world I can attest to the healthy balance we enjoy between environmental, economic and social values and assets - with a community keen to maintain and enhance these.
As one of the first to declare that we need to to take responsibility for our own contribution and mitigate the impact of a changing and challenging climate and as a beautiful and innovative place to live, work and visit.

Founder member and twice past president of the volunteer group Business Mentors Noosa. Past board member of local charity Smart Pups. Past board member of Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Vice President of Noosa Lions Soccer Club.

I have started, built and sold several successful companies. Noosa Shire has demonstrated that small is beautiful and it works. Local voices are heard. If they had not been listened to and acted upon we would not have a national park, our environment would have been trashed and our unique status as a holiday destination with a difference would have disappeared.

Financially Noosa is very strong. People sometimes forget it's basically a new business, splitting from a much bigger business (Sunshine Coast Council) six years ago. Noosa Council inherited D grade everything during the split plus lost lots of cash holdings that went across and never came back. Millions of dollars lost because SCC kept all the A grade plant equipment etc. Now we have minimal debt, cash reserves in the bank, our quality of life is still A1, while still purchasing assets. Rates are low and unemployment is below state average.

To protect the lifestyle and environment of Noosa. Eg retaining low rise urban development. 2.To have greater community engagement with genuine meaningful consultation. There must be transparent and thorough processes of public consultation. 3. Explore ideas like: requesting the State to review our divisional boundaries- should we reintroduce divisional Councillors; trial surfboard lockers and paid parking in Noosa's main beach as a way to address growing congestion and traffic concerns; rethink recycling- is it working? Can we do it better?; e-buses, e-bikes; is Council getting value for money- review consultation costs and tendering processes.
What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
My husband and I own a house in Little Cove and in November, 2019 we purchased a townhouse on Noosa Parade for investment purposes.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
Roads in coastal areas of the Noosa Shire are being addressed but not the roads and footpaths in the Hinterland. Roads need to be improved and footpaths maintained. Council needs to speak to the community and find out what upgrades are most important to them.

My husband Chris is the Commercial Manager at Page Furnishers At Pomona. He has been employing locals in the Noosa Shire for over 25 years.

I think this question is divisive. It should not be us versus them. A balance can be achieved whereby flourishing businesses do not adversely affect the quality of life of residents.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaigning?
I have been actively involved in the community for over 12 years in volunteering positions. I love this community and it is important that I give back. I have been a volunteer, competitor and have held committee positions at the Noosa Heads Surflifesaving Club for 7 years. I have patrolled Noosa and Peregian beaches. I have also volunteered for Noosa Boardriders Club for the past 5 years.
Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
No one is funding my campaign. I am running as an independent. I belong to no groups and no political parties. I purchased a surfboard from Thomas surfboards to raffle to help raise campaign money. Tickets are still available. I do not have any donors.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
I am university educated with a Bachelor of Laws (QUT), Masters in Labour Law and Industrial Relations (Uni Sydney) and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (QUT). I have worked in senior management in the retail sector in Sydney as an Operations Manager and have run my own Employment Law consultancy business.

This will be a full time job.
In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way
I was happy with how Noosa was being run until the last 4 years. It is my opinion that we deserve a better Council. The Noosa brand has been seriously damaged by questionable decisions made by Council and inexcusable misconduct. We need an ethical base to Council organisation. We need educated, involved, honest and engaged representatives.

Almost 19 years.
If elected, what are your top three priorities?
I am seeking to enhance the current and previous councils' initiatives, rather than change direction, and would like to:
- Through my media knowledge, help council to communicate better with ratepayers eg explain better when an audit on signage, parking or other changes etc might be occurring;
- Through my experience at Sunshine Coast Council, help attract new business harmonious with the Noosa Plan;
- Seek to ensure the hinterland, and Cooroy in particular, is supported in infrastructure terms as coastal house prices force such towns to become dormitory suburbs for workers supplying the coastal side of the shire.
What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
I own a home at Lake Macdonald with my partner Carol.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
Compared to some other areas I have seen, our road system is generally quite good.
I understand the council has recently developed a priority list for sealing unsealed roads, and one of the important considerations there will be the number of residences on each road from an economic viability viewpoint, as well as consideration on whether they experience regular use by school buses or similar important services.
It's worth remembering some residents choose to live on unsealed roads as they tend to be much quieter in traffic volume terms.
What connections to local businesses do you have?
As a journalist with Noosa News until recently, I have been careful to avoid creating any perception of conflict of interest to ensure my journalism was viewed as impartial so I have no connections.
Do you think business interests should be placed above resident interests?
A healthy economy is always virtuous for businesses and residents alike, but it should not be developed to the point that the social and environmental outcomes already achieved here in Noosa Shire are put at any risk.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaigning?
As a journalist with a busy role, and again the need for impartiality, such activities have not been possible. However, given recent events I am strongly considering training in volunteer firefighting.
Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
My campaign is completely self-funded. Part of the requirements for candidacy is (live from January 21 for public view, I understand) the need to record online through ECQ all campaign expenses, as well as actual and in-kind donations.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
I believe, other than councillor incumbents that I am the only candidate to date who has actually worked for a council - in my case, Sunshine Coast Council from 2010-2015, having been selected by then-SCC mayor Bob Abbot to work for him, and subsequently for current mayor Mark Jamieson in both mayoral and economic development areas when Bob chose not to run again.
Will you be treating a council job as part time while maintaining alternative employment?
No. I do play in and manage a popular band and will continue our general average twice-monthly gigs. Other than that, I seek to dedicate myself fully to the role.

We have operated 2 businesses in the time that we have lived in Noosa - Berri and Daily Juice distribution from 2000 until sold in 2005, and Joe the Handyman and Electrical Contractor from 2007 which I ceased operating once elected to Council in 2014.

Yes. Council currently ensures that the level of maintenance on all community assets meets the required level of depreciation to ensure that assets are well maintained and emergent works are undertaken as they arise. There is still some work to do on the asset management register that is near completion to ensure that maintenance works are undertaken according to priority needs.

As above - No current business interests. I believe we should try to maintain a balance to meet the needs of residents and business, which is always going to prove a to be a challenge.

Traffic Management, roads, bikeways and pathways and an open and responsive council.

I own a fitness studio in Peregian Beach and our own house in Marcus Beach. My partner and I own property in Brisbane, Mackay and Townsville.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
No, I don't, but not only roads, it extends to bikeways and pathways throughout the shire.

I have lots of connections to local businesses as we are heavily involved with the local community through our fitness studio. I believe that one should not be placed above the other, nor above environmental interests.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaigning?
I am currently a member of the Peregian Beach Community Association, Peregian Beach Business Association. Through our gym we have been fundraising for the RFS, Sunshine Butterflies and a shoe drive for children in Arnhem Land.

I am primarily self-funded but as a part of the Future Noosa team we are sharing our resources and also have a donate page on our website for those wishing to help out with our campaign.

I have a degree in Further Education and Training and am fully aware of how to incorporate systems and ideas into current strategies. I have 20 years military experience.

I would still put some time into the fitness industry; however, my usual day is very flexible, leaving most of the day available for council affairs.
In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
Protecting the natural environment and protecting against high rise development. It's also great at maintaining a relaxed coastal and hinterland family environment and in providing showcase activities like Noosa Alive and Noosa Tri.
Brian Stockwell (Councillor candidate, incumbent)
How long have you lived in Noosa?
I have lived in Noosa for the last 39 year, owner-building my first home in the early 1980s at Tinbeerwah.
If elected, what are your top three priorities?
I will be releasing my campaign policies closer to the election, however, in broad terms my priorities are:
A) Putting the interests of locals first - by continuing to build on the significant progress made over the last four years to protect their lifestyles, livelihoods and the environment.
B) Continue to diversify the local economy and create new high value jobs. Manage tourism to ensure the essence of Noosa is not lost and our suburbs aren't turned into tourist accommodation precincts. If our coastal and hinterland communities are going to continue to be great places to visit, they must first remain beautiful places to live and work.
C) Take action on Climate Change. Lead by example to significantly reduce Council and the community's greenhouse emissions. Adopt and implement a Climate Adaptation Plan to be better prepared for the impacts on our community such as bushfires, coastal erosion and drought.
What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
I am a unit owner and Chairman of the Body Corporate of the Noosa Lakes Resort. I run a part time consultancy providing environmental planning and catchment management services to the likes of Seqwater and the Queensland Government. After 30 years in local and state government my main investment income comes from my superannuation. As a volunteer I am the Group Leader of the Noosa Sea Scout Group who run a not for profit camping ground in Noosaville.
What connections to local businesses do you have? Do you think business interests should be placed above resident interests?
I have a long association with the business community in the Shire from the time I owned a wholesale nursery and was President of the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce in the 80s. I have worked with rural producers and local food manufacturers over many years in roles with the Department of Primary Industries and as the Sunshine Coast Regional Director for the Department of Employment Economic Development and Innovation. In the latter role my team led a range of small business development programs, grants and industry networks on the coast. I also represented the Noosa Chamber of Commerce in the Transition Committee during the de-amalgamation process.
Many residents are reliant on local business for their livelihoods and creating the conditions for economic success means continuing to build the Noosa brand as a sustainable destination, but this should not come at the cost of our lifestyle.

I have been active in the community since the 80s.
- I was on the committee of Noosa's first ever community tree planting project in the 1980s and went on to be one of the founding members of Noosa Landcare.

Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
My campaign is largely self-funded. If history is a guide I will also get a few small donations from family, friends and supporters which I am happy to declare prior to the election.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
I have fourteen years' experience in local government both as a Councillor (7 years) and as a town and environmental planner. I have another 16 years working with local government in various roles in state government which have included high level policy and planning positions and senior management. These roles spanned from town planning, environmental management and planning through to economic development.
I have qualifications in geography, economics, urban and regional planning, ecology and natural resource management and have lectured on these topics at the University of the Sunshine Coast after completing a PhD there. The combination of this knowledge and skills provides me with an excellent platform to guide the future of Noosa's environment and economy.
Will you be treating a council job as part time while maintaining alternative employment?
I consider the role of Councillor as a full-time job. I also am likely to pick up small consultancy contracts from time to time. As the Councillor with the best track record for attendance over the last term I can safely say this will not interfere with my role as a Councillor.
In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
Noosa has led the way in growth management and creating a sustainable tourism destination while continuing to increase the amount of land dedicated to conservation since the 1980s. Keeping at the leading edge is a continuing challenge. For first time this term we have seen our unemployment rate dip below the state average and our gross regional product grow at a higher rate than the state. Over the last term we have led by example in taking meaningful action on Climate Change and it is essential that we continue to do so.
Nathanael Ford (Councillor candidate)
How long have you lived in Noosa?
I was born in 1991 living in Wattle St, Cooroy, until December 2004 before moving to Pinbarren, where I still live today.
If elected, what are your three priorities?
I firmly believe in the basic principles of council - roads, rates and rubbish. My goal for rates is to keep them low, the aim of council is not to make money off the ratepayers but make enough to meet the needs for the ratepayers. Rubbish is a massive focus so working on ways to reduce waste throughout the shire and ways to educate people on waste are fundamental.
What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
I don't own any property (both residential or business related) and I am not invested in anything beyond my own superannuation.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
Simply put, no. I recently met with residents of Elizabeth St in Cooran where their road had an upgrade started in 1997 but the work stopped a third of the way down and little more has been done on the road since.
What connections to local business do you have? Do you think business interests should be placed above resident interests?
I do not own a business, the only connections I have to local business is as a customer and employee, for nine years I have worked for McDonalds and currently do as a manager.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaign?
I have been involved in voluntary work for most of my life, For many years I actively supported the Cooroy-Pomona Lions Club. In 2008 I was awarded the RSL's Community Service Medal and later awarded an honorary membership of the Sub-Branch. In 2011, I was awarded the Sunshine Coast Young Citizen of the Year as part of the Australia Day Awards for my work with the navy Cadets and the RSL among others.
Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
My campaign is entirely self-funded and to date, I have received absolutely no donations. I have received one endorsement from a former councillor, Bob Jarvis.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
Having worked for a large corporation for almost a decade I have learnt a lot about business, trends and community expectations.
Will you be treating a council job part time while maintaining alternative employment?
No, I strongly believe that anyone running for council and sitting as a councillor should be putting in 100 per cent for the community.
In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
The Noosa Shire is massively leading the way in biodiversity and in its environmental measures.
Tony Wellington (Mayoral candidate, incumbent - Mayor)
How long have you lived in Noosa?
I have lived in Noosa for 20 years.
If elected, what are your top three priorities?
I will be releasing specific policies closer to the election. But my top three priorities are always to safeguard the Noosa lifestyle, to protect the Noosa environment, and to defend the elements that distinguish Noosa and which thus underpin our economic success.
What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
With my wife, I own the house we live in at Tinbeerwah and we also own two apartments in Brisbane.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
This financial year, Noosa Council will be spending $15.9 million on roads and bridges. That amounts to one third of our total general rate revenue (ignoring grant funding). We can always allocate more funds to roads, but that would mean either increasing rates or else not funding other capital works projects. Such decisions are made annually at budget time.
What connections to local businesses do you have? Do you think business interests should be placed above resident interests?
I have operated small businesses locally. My wife currently runs a local small business. It is always important to find an appropriate balance between economic interests and resident living amenity. We need a vibrant economy to support our locals, but we must be careful not to allow economic interests to undermine the lifestyle of residents. The two must work hand-in-hand.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaigning?
Before being elected to council, I was an active member of various local community organisations. I was also a committee member on both Free Noosa and the Noosa Independent Alliance. As an elected councillor, I have determined not to be a member of any organisation so as to avoid perceived or real conflicts of interests. As mayor, I hold the honorary position of Patron of the Noosa & District Orchid & Foliage Society.
Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
There is a legal requirement to list donors who provide more than $499 to any candidate's campaign. I have already begun listing donations with the Electoral Commission of Queensland. This is publicly accessible.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
I have had four years' experience as a councillor serving on two separate councils, and four years' experience as mayor of Noosa Council. This council's track record regarding the environment and the economy - 3 per cent GRP growth each year for the past two years in Noosa, compared with 0.3 per cent decline for the State - speaks for itself.
Will you be treating a council job as part time while maintaining alternative employment?
My role as mayor has always been a full-time job - seven days a week, including many nights (much to my wife's chagrin).
In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
Noosa has long led the way in environmental management and sensitive human development. In recent years, we have also become a leader in sustainability including real actions to deal with climate change. We are also a leader in the design of public infrastructure (as the multiple awards for the Park Road Boardwalk attest), in responsible fiscal management, in IT, and in community engagement. Noosa Council regularly hosts staff from other local governments who want to experience our practices first-hand.
Clare Stewart (Mayoral candidate)
How long have you lived in Noosa?
Ten years
If elected, what are your top three priorities?
Transparency, accountability and ensure Noosa Council achieves best possible outcomes for every ratepayer dollar expended.
What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
Assets- involvement in family- Sultmann Family Trust.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
Road maintenance is a major issue and hinterland roads particularly bus routes are issues ratepayers continually raise with me.
What connections to local businesses do you have? Do you think business interests should be placed above resident interests?
Most business owners are residents. Our business community is the engine room of our economy and they service the needs of our residents. I believe in governing for all ratepayers in the delivering the fairest possible outcomes for all.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaigning?
My life experience is listening to people and delivering outcomes based on the best advice available to me. I am a Board Director of Youngcare a national charity which helps thousands of Australians each year, including many from the Sunshine Coast. I was a volunteer for the charity for over 3 years working 3 days a week and am fortunate to be now on the Board. I am also a keynote speaker and speak on a pro-bono basis concerning overcoming adversity, empowering women and providing support to various charities through my speaking engagements. All profits of my book- Standing on My Own Two Feet published in May 2013 were given to charity. Similarly I was a duty lawyer on a pro bono basis at the Maroochydore Courthouse while I was a Barrister. My husband and I support the local dolphins rugby club and other local charities.
Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
I am self funded up to this point of time but I will have no hesitation declaring my donations before the election.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
The Noosa council employs many highly qualified staff who advise the Mayor and councillors. To compliment this I have many friends who are highly successful achievers in life who can compliment my skills and expertise. I also hold a Bachelor of business, a Bachelor of Laws and Master of laws and I run two businesses of which I am a director and I am also a director of our family company.
Will you be treating a council job as part time while maintaining alternative employment?
I am totally committed to being a Mayor with an open door policy to deal with ratepayers and their concerns. It will be a full-time job.
In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
Noosa is leading the way in many areas but it is the fantastic lifestyle that we enjoy on all levels in our community and the many very different activities Business people and residents choose to excel in.
Andrew Squires (Councillor candidate)
How long have you lived in Noosa?
I moved to Noosa with my family in 1988, stayed for two years, then lived in Brisbane and back up to Noosa in 2014.
If elected, what are your top three priorities?
Roads and transport management.
Environmental issues.
Council responsiveness to and engagement with the community.
What business, residential and investment interests do you have locally and beyond?
My partner and I own investment property in Noosa and Brisbane.
Do you think enough is being done to maintain our roads?
No, from what I see more can be done and this would include the footpaths and bike lanes.
What connections to local businesses do you have? Do you think business interests should be placed above resident interests?
I have some connections to local businesses through my involvement with Noosa Alive, memberships with local business groups and my job. I do not believe business interests should be placed above residents' interests. The job of the council is to strike the proper balance between residents, the environment and business.
What community and volunteer activities have you engaged in prior to the current election campaigning?
I have volunteered for two years with the Noosa Alive arts and cultural festival where I am currently president. I was previously Secretary of the Noosa Business Group and have also volunteered with Noosa Outriggers.
Who is funding your campaign and are you prepared to list donors publicly prior to the election?
I am self-funding the campaign with support from the Future Noosa funding page and any public donors who wish to support us. From 20 January the ECQ will have real time exposure of donors over $500 and all candidates will have to comply with that.
What relevant experience have you had that qualifies you to guide the council and community's environmental and economic path?
I have 30 years business experience both in Australia and internationally. I directed my own business for 10 years and have worked in all aspects of business - budgets, decision making and human resources. I continue to educate myself and am currently completing a post graduate credential in Professional Management. I am a member of Landcare and the natural environment was one of the reasons we moved to live in Noosa.
Will you be treating a council job as part time while maintaining alternative employment?
I'll be giving the council as much time as it needs. That will be my guide.
In your opinion, in what areas is Noosa leading the way?
Noosa is leading the way by maintaining a wonderful natural environment for locals to live in and visitors to experience. The best part of this is that we do not have any significant overdevelopment and that's the way we must keep it. We have a progressive and evolving community that is finding its own culture and diversity.
