Manly West crash: Victim identified as Jayke Harlem, 27, as friends pay tribute

Friends of a 27-year-old man who died in a single-vehicle crash on Brisbane’s bayside have told of the admirable actions of two bystanders, who comforted him at the scene before paramedics arrived.

A 27-year-old man, who died after his car hit a tree on Brisbane’s bayside has been identified as Jayke Harlem.

Paramedics rushed to the serious single-vehicle crash at the intersection of Manly Rd and Wondall Road in Manly West shortly before 4pm on Wednesday.

Mr Harlem, who was the driver and sole occupant of the blue Ford Falcon, sustained life-threatening injuries and was declared dead at the scene.

Tributes have started to flow on social media for Mr Harlem who worked at Portgate Logistics.

“Would just like to thank the community for all the messages of condolence & care that flowed for this young man who sadly passed away as the result of the Manly West traffic accident on Wednesday,” Mumma M Kar wrote on social media.

“Jayke sadly leaves behind a beautiful 2 yr old daughter & a lovely partner as well as family members & friends.

“Thank you to Tim (Parker), owner of Nitro crew tyres Wynnum, for being by Jaykes’ side comforting him until emergency crews arrived.

“I also learned that there was a lovely lady named Erin who was first on scene who the family would like to thank as well.

“Another young person taken too soon, R. I. P Jayke.”

Mr Parker responded to the post saying; “I did what any decent human would do. I’m still in shock and disbelief”.

“I wish all the family and friends nothing but strength and love during this painful loss.

“Tragic losses like this strike a nerve with any beautiful local loving community.

“Just drive safe and get home safe everyday people.”

While another person commented that they were “still in shock”.

“Although we weren’t best of mates, I’ve known you since we were little … you were taken way too soon. Guess tomorrow is never really promised,” they wrote.

“My heart goes out to your whole family”.

The 27-year-old was initially trapped in the vehicle.

No other persons were injured as a result of the crash.

Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing, and police appeal to anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward.
