Mackay’s newest professional coach is hoping to put an end to the ‘one-season curse’ of his new gig, and says his methods will lend itself to success.

Growing up on the hardwood and spending his life with a ball in hand, basketball is firmly in Rob Grieve’s veins.

Tasked with the job he defined as “the defence against the dark arts of Mackay Basketball”, Grieve hopes he will get more than a year at the helm of the Meteorettes NBL1 team.

Grieve said he hoped to bring international experience to the domestic courts.

“I was the video co-ordinator at Marshall University in West Virginia for a year, then spent three years at Arkansas Tech as the assistant coach,” he said.

“I really got into coaching my sister’s club team because I wanted to stay in the sport, and through some rep coaching I got to work with some really elite coaches who inspired me and gave me passion to pursue it as a career.

“When I got back to Melbourne in 2020, everything was terrible, I went from working full-time to part-time, I had two part-time jobs at the same time for a month before deciding I would go interstate.”

The Meteorettes are coming off an ultimately disappointing season after falling short in the playoffs, but expectations are not as high in 2022 after losing Olympian Cayla George to Cairns.

While Grieve has not made any new signings as the new head coach, he said he wanted to “empower the leaders to hold each other accountable” on and off the court.

“I like to preach accountability, I’m going to tell you the truth like what we can achieve if we do this, or what shortcuts will bring,” he said.

“Good teams are led by coaches and great teams are led by players, and I want to create an environment where players understand their impact on each other.”
