A popular dirt track speedway has hit the market about a year after a community-led renovation effort stalled.

Macs Speedway has been at 13 Grants Rd in Palmyra, 15 minutes west of Mackay, hosting racing events since the 1980s.

In 2022, a new owner Jenny Hawkings told the Daily Mercury that maintenance of the facilities was under way with help from tradespersons and volunteers.

“For over 30 years Macs Speedway brought the excitement of oval, dirt track racing to Mackay,” Ms Hawkings said.

“Interest in (the) speedway’s return locally is extremely high despite the venue not operating in recent years.”

Even then Macs was noted as not having held regular racing for some years, likely following a grandstand collapse that injured a young family in 2016.

The speedway operator RobnJosh Pty Ltd copped a $60,000 fine (with no convictions) in Mackay Magistrates Court in 2018 after it pleaded guilty to failing to comply with its health and safety duty, after a long-running investigation by Workplace Health and Safety.

In the listing, Knight Frank Mackay describe the property as offering “the fortunate buyer to capitalise on the existing, extensive infrastructure in place to create a world class motorsport facility or other uses” per council approval.

The property is approximately 9.308ha of freehold land with a 400m oval speedway and associated infrastructure, several existing buildings including what appears to be a managers home and barn.

Zoned for sports and recreation not far from town, the listing highlighted that the existing facilities allowed “for immediate income producing potential”.

Knight Frank realtor Deniz Mete is accepting Expressions of Interest Closing 4pm (AEST) Friday 24th May, 2024.
