A young driver charged over a deadly multi vehicle collision could face up to 12 months jail after pleading guilty to the Bruce Highway horror smash that claimed the life of an interstate traveller.
Townsville man Bailey Lloyd Baker was seriously injured when the Toyota LandCruiser he was driving hit an Isuzu truck and then a Mazda CX5 at Bloomsbury on August 1, 2024.
Police say the LandCruiser was travelling north and crossed into the oncoming traffic lane about 2.50pm, striking the Isuzu truck towing a dog trailer and then a white Mazda Cx5 travelling behind.
Both the LandCruiser and Mazda were destroyed in the crash – the LandCruiser rolled landing on its roof, while the Mazda was forced into bushland.
Debris was scattered across the roadway from the crash that blocked the Bruce Highway for hours with traffic backed up for several kilometres.
Passing motorists who were first on scene — coincidentally including a forensic crash officer — pulled the horrifically injured Baker from the upside down mangled wreck and he was flown to Townsville for treatment.
The driver of the Mazda, a 72-year-old man from Victoria, was critically injured and flown to Townsville where he tragically succumbed to his injuries two weeks later on August 14.
A passenger in the LandCruiser, a 34-year-old Mundingburra man, the driver of the Isuzu, a 61-year-old Sarina man, and a passenger in the Cx5, a 69-year-old Clifton Hill woman, received minor injuries and were taken to Mackay Base Hospital.
Baker is charged with careless driving causing death and first appeared in Mackay Magistrates Court in November 2024.
Baker has since pleaded guilty to the charge, which has a maximum penalty of 12 months jail and a minimum six month driving ban.
The matter was adjourned to Townsville for sentence next month.
