Just a month after meeting on a dating app, a young woman decided to call off her new romance with a Mackay labourer.

Little did she know her 19-year-old scorned lover would react by threatening “gang” violence.

Details of the terrifying turn the relationship took were detailed in Mackay Magistrates Court where Slavko Larry Slamkov pleaded guilty to using a carriage service to menace/harass.

On August 12, between 10pm and 11pm in Ooralea, the victim received 12 calls and numerous text messages in which Slamkov threatened to watch her house and bash any men there.

Police prosecutor Ruth Whisker said a friend of the victim also received numerous texts including one which warned Slamkov would “kick the door in and run through”.

“These messages include: ‘We will surround the house and watch it’,” Ms Whisker told the court

“Welcome to Mackay and the Slamkovs.

“I don’t care, we are gang-related and everything, I will drop that c--t.

“Stop looking at him or he’ll get stabbed.

“I have your name and address (and) if any police are called, my people will know you, so good luck with that.”

Ms Whisker said Slamkov threatened to go to the victim’s house and bash one of her friends “because he knows a lot of people, has a lot of money, can get people killed and owns Mackay”.

She said the victim immediately went to Mackay Police Station, where Slamkov called her again as police listened in.

The court heard when the victim asked why he was harassing her, he replied “because I want you back”.

Police cautioned Slamkov at the end of that phone call and he voluntarily came to the station for an interview.

Fisher Dore defence lawyer Sean Gibbs said his client’s offending wasn’t “an ongoing course of conduct” and had occurred after hearing sexual comments about his ex while drunk at a mate’s birthday party.

“I’ll ask Your Honour to take into account that it was only one night, there was never any intention of carrying these out”, he said.

“My client was behaving in an extremely stupid manner (here) a lot of it was big-noting himself.”

Mr Gibbs said Slamkov, an experienced labourer, had a mining job lined up that was terminated once he disclosed his offending.

Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan conceded the harassment was short-lived, but said it was “really out there” and “very persistent on that one night”.

She warned Slamkov that he had “said a lot of what I would call terrifying things to this young lady”.

“I take into account that, as a result of being honest with your employer, you were terminated”, she said.

“At 19, it is still easy to categorise you as immature (and) I’m told you hadn’t had a serious relationship before, so the fallout of this may have meant much more (than) an older person.

“If you were older than (19), I would never do what I’m going to do today.”

Slamkov was ordered to pay $500 compensation to his victim and placed on a two-year good behaviour bond with a $1500 fine to be paid if he offends again.

He is not permitted within 100 metres of his ex or her house and is banned from all contact.
