A Mackay man with a long history of drunken violence has faced court for punching his mother’s friend in front of a police station.

Paul Anthony Cramond pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm in a public place while adversely affected by alcohol on January 20, 2023.

His lawyer Dariv Yarrow said the 35 year old was drinking wine in a Mackay pub with his mother and her friend before the incident occurred outside the Sydney Street police station.

Mr Yarrow said his client had been attending Lives Lived Well and maintaining his sobriety until they closed over Christmas and he “fell off the wagon”.

“He has a very limited recollection of the offence,” Mr Yarrow said.

“His criminal history shows a pattern of a man who gets intoxicated and commits acts of violence.

“Prior to this, he had no ill will with the (victim).”

The court heard Cramond punched the victim five times, who suffered a bloody nose and facial injuries.

Mr Yarrow said the offence could have been premeditated, given Cramond lacked any grudge against the victim and that “it was committed in front of the police station”.

Prosecutor Leonie Taufa’ao said Cramond was on parole at the time of the offence.

He had been released from jail four months before, after serving a sentence for breaching a protection order his mother placed against him.

Cramond’s mother was present in court for his sentencing, and told him she loved him.

Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan told Cramond that he had to address the reality that he got violent when drunk.

“The victim was your mother’s friend,” Ms Hartigan said.

“For no apparent reason whatsoever, you have struck her some five times and she’s suffered an injury.”

Ms Hartigan said Cramond’s criminal history dated all the way back to 2010 with “numerous” violent charges for which he had been imprisoned.

Cramond was sentenced to two years jail to be served concurrently with his previously issued sentence of 18 months.

Ms Hartigan declared the 90 days Cramond had spent behind bars since his arrest on January 20 as time already served.

He will become eligible to apply for parole on July 19.
