A man accused of murdering his father in New South Wales will have a separate stabbing case at a Mackay hostel finalised.
Police allege Stephen Alan Warne stabbed his father Jamie Culgan in a Leumeah apartment in south Sydney, a foul odour leading to the discovery of a body on March 14, 2022.
Barely two months later Mr Warne was living in the Mackay city centre at Gecko’s Rest budget hostel where he allegedly stabbed a fellow lodger multiple times on Sunday, May 8.
His matters were mentioned in Mackay District Court on Monday when defence barrister Scott McLennan said Mr Warne had “some serious mental illness”.
Mr McLennan said once Mr Warne’s Queensland matters had been finalised he would be extradited to New South Wales to face charges of murder against his father.
The court heard Mr Warne was in custody in Rockhampton.
Mr McLennan said Mr Warne had requested to be sentenced on a date later this year that allowed him to see family before the case is finalised and he was extradited to New South Wales.
Warne is charged in Queensland with one count of unlawful wounding and one count of committing acts intending to maim/disfigure/disable.
The matter was listed for sentence in late September.
