Police officers have made a dramatic arrest at a Mackay region home with a dog biting a man wanted in relation to stolen cars.
A Kennedy St resident, who witnessed the event unfolding in South Mackay, said he saw two police officers jump the fence of a neighbouring backyard to arrest the man shortly about 12.40pm.
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said a man in his 30s had tried to flee from police in a vehicle but officers had arrested him a “short time later”.
The spokeswoman said officers declared a crime scene at the address in relation to an investigation into stolen cars.
Cody, a Kennedy St resident, said he had heard “tyres screeching” before seeing his neighbours and police officers “trying to run and jump the fence into the other yard”.
“A couple minutes later we saw them bring someone out … it was pretty crazy,” Cody said.
His partner Georgina said they regularly heard burnouts at the property in the early hours of the morning.
A neighbour, who requested to stay anonymous, said they saw a police dog bite the wanted man under his arm and on his torso.
It was understood the bite wound had caused the man to heavily bleed.
“He was resisting arrest, so they had to use whatever means they had to get him on the ground,” the neighbour said, adding the car which the man had attempted to get away in had driven through a boundary fence.
The QPS spokeswoman said the man “sustained non-life threatening injuries” and paramedics were called to the scene where they tended to his injuries on the nature strip.
She confirmed the man had been taken to Mackay Base Hospital about 1.30pm.
“Investigations are continuing. No further information is available,” the spokeswoman said.
More than four police crews had responded to the incident.
