Joseph Bevan Hill pleads guilty to dangerous driving and evasion

A young man has been blasted for his ‘disgraceful, absolutely atrocious’ driving attitude as a magistrate reveals his traffic history shame.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A motorist has been blasted as having the worst traffic history a Mackay magistrate has ever come across after losing 197 points and receiving more than $18,000 in fines in three years.

And Joseph Bevan Hill has been hit with another $8000 fine and a seven-year licence disqualification.

Mackay Magistrate Damien Dwyer said he had been considering an absolute driving ban until medical evidence revealed the 25 year old had been suffering drug-induced psychosis at the time.

Mackay Magistrates Court heard Hill was now involved in counselling for his mental health issues, which had been ongoing since at least 2015.

“Your (driving) behaviour has been disgraceful, absolutely atrocious,” Mr Dwyer said.

“You are by far the worst traffic offender I’ve ever had before me, ever.”

The court heard he had lost 197 points and received fines totalling more than $18,000 in three years.

“You have shown an inability to be aware of the consequences of your actions.

“You just seem to think that you just keep doing (it).”

The court heard Hill’s father was concerned about his son’s financial well-being but Mr Dwyer said it was all the young man’s own fault.

“You keep getting these fines,” he said.

“Any reasonable, rational thinking person would say this has got to stop.”

Hill pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and evading police.

Mr Dwyer said the dangerous driving was not the worst example of that type of offending.

“It was over a reasonably short period of time and there was no one injured,” he said.

“But what is of concern for me is your... pattern of offending you have shown over the last number of years.”

Mr Dwyer said the courts had determined the need to protect the public from “persons who create danger on the road particularly those who have a pattern of doing so”.

“And that is you,” Mr Dwyer said.

“Just the sheer number of speeding tickets and demerit points tickets and traffic-related tickets that you have had.

“And the sheer number of points that you have lost in a very short period of time.

“You have clearly, clearly displayed a pattern of creating danger for the community while on the roads.”
