Man killed in cane train collision at Brewers Rd, Sarina

Police are investigating how a man was hit by a cane train in a North Queensland town. Warning: Distressing details.

Police are investigating the circumstances behind a man’s tragic death after he was crushed under a cane train in North Queensland.

Emergency crews were called to Brewers Rd, Sarina, on Thursday afternoon to reports of a pedestrian collision.

A Wilmar Sugar and Renewables spokeswoman confirmed there had been a fatal incident on a rail bridge “involving one of our locomotives late this afternoon”.

She said the inbound locomotive came into contact with a pedestrian on the Plane Creek Bridge.

“We are providing our driver with every possible support,” the spokeswoman said.

Multiple police, fire and ambulance crews had rushed to address following after Wilmar workers had called in the emergency just after 5pm.

It is understood he was crushed under the train, with crews working for hours to retrieve his body.

Senior Sergeant Trevor Robson who spoke to media last night confirmed the man was initially unable to be identified.

“This afternoon an unknown male at this stage has gone under a fully loaded cane train and as a result has lost his life,” Mr Robson said.

Police believe there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said fire crews were called to the scene about 5.15pm by the rail line operator.

By 8.10pm, firefighters left the scene, leaving only police.
All overnight cane bins have been halted.
