Driver charged after car crashes into South Mackay home

A man who allegedly crashed a high-end car into a suburban unit block was found standing next to the damaged vehicle in a garage. Read how police tracked him down.

A large piece of a luxury car helped police track down the driver who allegedly crashed into a home in South Mackay.

Emergency services were called to the Evan St home just after 7pm Saturday with reports a Mercedes Benz had crashed into a unit block.

Police on arrival found the front unit was damaged but the car had left the scene.

However, the car’s front bumper bar was ripped off in the collision and was lying nearby on the ground.

A police spokesman said the number plate was attached.

Police checks identified an address and officers went to the registered owner’s home where a man was found standing beside a damaged vehicle inside a garage.

The man was breath tested and allegedly returned a reading of 0.182 per cent.

He was charged with driving under the influence and issued a notice to appear in court.

It is understood police have obtained dashcam footage of the vehicle driving in the area shortly before the incident.

The spokesman said investigations were continuing into the manner of driving including reports the vehicle had been speeding in the 50km/h suburban area.

Queensland Ambulance paramedics attended the scene but were not required to treat any patients.
