Car crashes into North Mackay holiday home

A driver fled after crashing a car into a holidaying family’s North Mackay house, levelling a sign post and smashing into a ute.

A Yeppoon family holidaying in Mackay woke to a bang after a car came screeching into their front yard before police swarmed the home.

John Muirhead and his wife Joanne Hallan were sleeping in the back room of the house, at the corner of Glenpark Rd and Meadow St, when they woke to chaos about 4.20am.

“My daughter heard a big bang and started yelling, which woke us up,” Mr Muirhead said.

“Then I heard someone running down the side of the house.”

But when Mr Muirhead looked, he saw the runner was a policeman, and there were more officers swarming the front of the house.

Mr Muirhead said his daughter informed him his beloved ute, which was parked up on the front lawn, had borne the brunt of a car crashing into it from the street.

Reports indicate the driver fled from the scene after driving up the gutter and levelling a sign post

“My daughter said ‘someone’s smacked into your car’,” Mr Muirhead said.

“I said, ‘what do you mean someone’s smacked into my car’.

“I feel pretty p---ed, but what do you do?”

Mr Muirhead said there didn’t appear to be any substantial damage to his car but would need to get the motor and radiator checked.

A police spokesman said police were investigating the crash and the driver had not been found.
