Alleged meth trafficker Lauchlan Joseph McGregor fails to apply for bail

A Queensland man, who police allege is linked to bikies and was caught with thousands in cash and nearly $100,000 worth of meth, says he can’t afford to pay for a lawyer. Here’s the latest from court.

When police searched Lauchlan Joseph McGregor on the night of October 16 they found 32g of cocaine and 126g of meth on his person and a package containing 200g of meth in the vehicle. The police also found $25,000 in cash and a handgun and knife. Picture: Contributed.

After appearing in court for the third time in a week, an alleged drug courier with links to the Finks Motorcycle Club has failed to apply for bail.

Police allege Lauchlan Joseph McGregor was carrying drugs when he was stopped next to his car on Peri Road in Te Kowai on Sunday night.

They further allege Mr McGregor had 126g of meth on him and a 200g package of meth in his car with a street value estimated between $80,000 and $100,000, 32g of cocaine worth between $6000 and $10,000 and $25,000 cash in zip lock bags alongside a handgun and a small knife.

As investigations continued, Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Eaton said, “police believe the man has links to the Finks outlaw motorcycle gang”.

Mr McGregor was charged with possessing dangerous drugs, tainted property and explosives and remanded in custody.

He first appeared in Mackay Magistrates Court on Monday, October 17.

An unlawful possession of weapons charge was also added on Tuesday, October 18.

Magistrate Bronwyn Hartigan adjourned the case on both days to allow Mr McGregor time to find a lawyer.

On Wednesday, October 18, Magistrate Damien Dwyer heard from Legal Aid duty lawyer Rose Varley who said that time hadn’t been fruitful.

She said McGregor complained he couldn’t afford a lawyer as police had “taken all of his money”.

Mr McGregor asked Magistrate Dwyer whether he would be able to be remanded near family in Maryborough jail but was told the decision was up to Correctional Services.

He will remain on remand until his next court appearance on January 11, 2023.
