A new servo could soon be coming to the Mackay city centre, near a busy shopping centre, adding more cars to rush-hour traffic.
Plans for a 7/11 service station were lodged with the Mackay council in March with developers hoping to transform a partially vacant lot on Nelson St into a single-storey shop with six refuelling bowsers.
The documents submitted to council by property consultancy business Property Projects Australia Pty Ltd — on behalf of Bower Property Group — said the development aimed to “activate” the “under-utilised” lot.
“The development is designed to seamlessly integrate into the urban fabric, fostering economic activity … and improving service accessibility for the community,” they wrote.
“The proposal responds to the diverse needs of the area, providing a critical piece of infrastructure.”
An existing residence and carport already at 6a Nelson St would be demolished to make way for the new development.
The vacant lot with frontage on River St also hosts the Apulia Wood Fired Kitchen pizza truck at times.
Covering a 1617sqm space, the finished construction will feature a shop with 240sqm floor space run by 7/11 and operating 24/7.
The development will be accessible by a left-in, left-out crossover on River St, another on Nelson St and will have six parking spaces, including one disability space.
“The incorporation of feature trees, pedestrian friendly connections, and soft landscaping treatments enhances the walkability and permeability of the city centre,” they wrote.
Two underground fuel storage tanks will be installed as part of construction and the finished service station will be open for both light and heavy vehicles.
The proposed service station is located less than 300m from the Mangrove Rd Ampol and it is expected to generate an additional 28 vehicles per hour in traffic on the local road network.
