New housing is coming to West Mackay as two local land owners look to knock down one house and put up units in its place.

Four townhouse units have been proposed for development at 25 Schaefer St in West Mackay by developers Paul and Janet Dwyer.

On the corner of Schaefer St and Gillan St, the new development will have frontage onto both streets.

Unit 1 will be a three bedroom unit while units 2, 3 and four will only have two bedrooms.

Planner for the town planning firm RPG Group, Sharon Etwell wrote in the development application the development of the four proposed units would be a positive

outcome for the West Mackay area and said the units will complement the existing residential uses throughout the area.

Ms Etwell also wrote that adding higher density housing to the lot was in line with Mackay regional council planning schemes due to the sites proximity to a park, school and the centre of town.

Each unit will have a combined kitchen, living and dining area.

The proposal comes as the Greater Whitsunday mayors called on the Miles government and LNP to commit to delivering on housing promises ahead of the state election with Premier Steven Miles proposing modular homes as a potential solution to the housing crisis.
