Mater Mackay welcomes new robots for orthopaedic surgery

A $2m investment in world-class robotic medical technology will give patients across Central Queensland the very best in orthopaedic care.

Two new robotic platforms are up and running at Mater Mackay’s orthopaedic surgery operations, giving patients across the region access to world-class medical technology without the need to travel to Brisbane.

Andergrove’s Dale Redden underwent a knee replacement at Mater seven weeks ago and she said the robot had made a “big difference”.

“Just before I had it, I just couldn’t walk anywhere,” she told a packed room at the Mater business breakfast.

“I’m out and about now doing everything.

“I was up walking the next day and I haven’t stopped since.”

Seated next to Mrs Redden was Dr Chris Wainwright, the surgeon who operated on her.

He said the robot made his work even more precise and reduced trauma to the knee.

The two robots are from Stryker and Zimmer-Biomet, two American medical technology companies.

The Stryker Mako robot improves precision for surgeons performing knee and hip replacements while the Zimmer-Biomet ROSA Knee System is used for patients requiring knee implants.

“The research coming out now shows patients who are operated on with robotic technology, such as the Stryker Mako, can be discharged from hospital more quickly and have an earlier return to function than if they have a more conventional knee replacement,” Dr Wainwright said.

“The Stryker Mako allows Mackay patients to have access to the latest technology, most reliable operations and better surgical outcomes without having to travel to Brisbane.”

Mater invested $2m to bring the robots to the region.

Dr Wainwright noted at the breakfast the presence of such world-class technology at Mater would make the region more attractive for future doctors.
