Mackay unites for three-year-old boy battling deadly leukaemia
Mackay businesses rally behind three-year-old Harry Clark’s cancer fight, with a $40k fundraising effort that moved his mother to tears.
The mother of a young boy who was diagnosed with a deadly blood cancer said she was brought to tears as a wave of community support helped raise up to $40k for her sick son.
While three-year-old Harry Clark takes his first steps since a long round of chemotherapy, more supporters have come forth with donations from across the Mackay business sector along with fundraisers.
Tyre companies, local photographers and even guttering companies have generously backed a community raffle organised by the boy’s aunty and uncle’s company, All Stacks Electrical.
Earlier this year, parents Damien Clark and Danielle Stack were dealt a devastating blow when Harry, 3, was diagnosed with leukaemia after what they thought was a daycare bug turned out to be yet another “lightning strike”.
It came only years after they had to watch their firstborn slowly slip away through palliative care.
Within hours of the shock diagnosis, Harry and his family were flown to the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, where he underwent chemotherapy.
“He stopped walking for six to eight weeks and then we sort of had to learn to walk again because he had lost all that muscle tone,” Ms Stack said.
“Last week we were in hospital and were admitted three times in the week for fevers and rhinovirus.”
After being treated with immunotherapy, Harry’s condition has slightly improved but he faces a long three-year road ahead.
To help the young battler, Mackay gym Crossfit 4740 will host Harry’s Hurricane fundraiser on Saturday, December 6, featuring a live auction, raffles and a fire truck powered car wash.
Also organised by Harry’s uncle Nathan, supporters are invited to wear blue, with a $20 entry fee going towards the family’s expenses.
Ms Stack said she was brought to tears by the amount of love from people she didn’t even know.
“They’re so generous and so nice. The support and love is just next level,” she said.
“It’s one less stress.”
It comes after $3k was raised during a World’s Greatest Shave and a rodeo event helped garner more community support.
Funds will help the family with temporary accommodation near the hospital, travel expenses to and from Mackay, support for their daughter’s wellbeing and schooling, and to help recover lost income as a result of Harry’s health battle.
