VOTED as Mackay's best real estate agent for 2020, Zak Meiert said his job required more than just selling property.

"It's more about people," the LJ Hooker Mackay agent said.

"It's a big choice for someone to make to sell or buy a house and the emotional connections that people have - it's not to be taken lightly.

"(People) need to be listened to and they need to be taken seriously; that to me is what makes a good agent."

But he only began working in the real estate industry as a business administrator in 2013 after his previous employer went insolvent.

"It was very daunting because it was something I'd never done before," he said.

"But I had an amazing mentor and amazing staff around me who were able to help me adjust.

"Within six to 12 months, I thought, 'Oh my god, I've found my niche'.

"Not too many people can fall into something by accident and have it fall into place."

Mr Meiert has since worked his way up the ranks to now operate as a full-time property agent.

"I love my job, it's a lifestyle and I have a passion for it," he said.

"I think for me, an (agent) is someone willing to listen to their client, willing to find out what they need and what their purposes are for either buying or selling, and just being able to help and respect what they're needing to do."

Taking out runner-up for Mackay's best real estate agent for 2020 was Gardian Real Estate's Joseph Rickman followed by First National Real Estate Sarina's Greg Brady as second runner-up.
