A white Izuzu truck carrying a load of construction material had been heading south on the highway when it is alleged a Ford Falcon ute crashed into the left side.
It is understood the ute had been travelling on Glendaragh Rd and had turned onto the highway and allegedly T-boned the truck.
The driver and sole occupant of the ute suffered critical injuries and was taken to Mackay Base Hospital via Ambulance.
Immediately after the crash, timber, dirt, and an assortment of other debris could be seen strewn across several lanes
The driver of the truck suffered non serious injuries.
Diversions were in place with police informing motorists heading north to travel on Sugarshed Rd.
But despite a police road closure in place at Mackay Ring Road one driver appeared to ignore the marked vehicle with flashing lights and multiple witches hats and instead drove north on the wrong side of the road.
It is understood he was stopped not far away before reaching the crash site.
Another vehicle attempted to drive over the witches hats but was stopped by the officer on duty at the diversion point.
