David Deguara of Hamdenvale Brahmans dies after battle with motor neurone disease

The man widely regarded as breeding superior genetics into Australian brahman cattle is being remembered for not just his work, but the man himself. Read the touching tributes.

A keen interest in the genetic components and a love of breeding cattle built a legacy that will not soon be forgotten in the Mackay community.

David Deguara dedicated 50 years of his life to breeding genetically superior brahmans, and has the cattle industry in mourning after losing his battle with motor neurone disease.

Mr Deguara’s wife Joy Deguara said he was so passionate about the genetic composition of Brahmans.

“There is much to celebrate about his life, the contribution he made to the brahman cattle industry and his love for his family,” she wrote on Facebook.

“He’s left a wonderful legacy with Hamdenvale Brahmans and we look forward continuing to grow and share the genetics he was so passionate about.”

Mr Deguara was diagnosed with MND 18 months ago, but despite his battle his friends said he continued to carry a smile.

“It was a pleasure to have known and worked for such a kind, humble gentleman,” George Lyon said.

Mr Deguara’s first stud started in Hamden in 1970, when he began Hamdenvale Brahmans.

He and his wife owned about 400 stud cows, with Mr Deguara’s active interest in breeding a superior Brahman the reason for his work.

Recognition for Mr Deguara’s work was garnered around the world, and the studmaster travelled regularly to the United States in an active quest for find new genetics.

Hamdenvale Brahmans were sold across Australia, with buyers impressed with the genetic versatility Mr Deguara had bred into his livestock.

“His contribution to brahman genetics was outstanding,” Mick Trout said.

“He was a very humble man.”
