Pte Christensen was one of several Mackay region Diggers who survived the horrors of Bullecourt only to succumb to wounds or disease or be killed in action within 20 months of that fateful day.

“He was to prove a very good soldier, a point highlighted by the fact he was one of a small number of men to serve at Gallipoli for the whole of the campaign,” students at Mackay North State High School wrote.

“Alf’s luck ran out … when he was killed at Flers on 11 November during an ill fated raid on German trenches.

“He led his section of bombers in support of the attacking force, however he was killed before he reached the German trenches.

“L/Corp H. Dimmett stated that he was ‘last seen hanging in the German barbed wire severely wounded, but continuing to bomb the enemy, and encouraging his bombers’.”

“At Hooge, France on 20th September, 1917 during the operations in Glencorse and Polygon Velde Woods, Pte Clarke, after his section commander was killed, took charge and led his men into action, showing splendid skill, pluck and determination.

“After the objective was captured he established an outpost where he resisted an enemy counter-attack.

“He remained at this post until he was relieved.”

“On the night of the 15th May, 1918, in order to test some Mills grenades, Sergeant Coyne threw one of them, but it failed to clear the parapet and fell into the trench in which there were a number of other men. Sergeant Coyne shouted to them to run for their lives, and endeavoured to find the bomb, in order to throw it away, but owing to the darkness he was unable to lay his hand on it in time, and, the men not being clear of the trench, he deliberately threw himself onto the top of it and let it explode under him, receiving fatal injuries, but saving the lives of his comrades.”

“As he went over the parapet he shouted ‘Fix bayonets – when I call “Australia for ever” charge’.

They were met by a hail of fire, Samuel was shot in the foot and later was shot fatally as he was being evacuated.
