MACKAY residents paused in sombre reflection yesterday to mark one of the most important days of the Christian religious calender - Good Friday.

Rev Dr Julia Pitman, minister at St Paul's Uniting Church in Macalister St, said Easter celebrated the central message of the Christian Gospel which is the resurrection of Jesus Christ and "the hope that we have that those that are in Christ share in that resurrection, so that this life is not all that we have, that we have union with God in life everlasting.

"On Good Friday we reflect on the death of Christ and the circumstances that lead to his death and the way we are called to submit ourselves to God's will that can involve the greatest sacrifice and that is of our lives," she said.

"On Sunday we will reflect on the hope and joy of the resurrection, the service will be more upbeat, more a sense of celebration and there will be a great sense of praise to God."
