THE State Government is offering an incentive program for Ergon Energy customers in areas around Proserpine.
The cashback incentives are available to residents living from Dingo Beach to Conway, south east of Proserpine.
State Minister for Energy Mark Bailey made the announcement in Proserpine on Sunday.
"The program offers cashback incentives for residential and business customers who reduce network demand during peak periods by being proactive in the way they use and manage their energy," he said.
"It includes doing things like changing tariffs - such as changing your hot water system to an economy tariff, installing more energy efficient appliances such as air conditioners or lighting and even permanently shifting electricity usage to off-peak times.
Mr Bailey said forecast growth and electricity demand in the area was putting pressure on the network which prompted Ergon to consider innovative alternatives to traditional solutions.
"Costly new infrastructure to accommodate mainly short term peak usage on the really hot days of the year ultimately puts upwards pressure on electricity prices and this incentive program is one way to avoid that," he said.
Similar programs exist throughout the state, including in Mackay.
Under the demand management incentive programs:
- Businesses can receive a $350 cashback for each kilovolt-ampere (kVA) of reduced network demand resulting from a variety of demand and energy management measures
- Residential customers are being offered payments of up to $250 when changing fixed speed pool pumps to an economy tariff, upgrading to a 5 star energy efficient pool pump, and changing existing electric, solar, or electric heat pump hot water systems to an economy tariff.
- Incentives of up to $500 are available for customers who install PeakSmart air conditioning.
Customers can apply online by entering their National Metering Identification (NMI) number, found on their electricity bill, into the Ergon website at www.ergon.com.au/incentivesby calling 1300 550 766.
