Look both ways because sugar crushing has begun and the cane trains are in full swing.

Wilmar Sugar Proserpine Mill kicked off the season just after 10am on Thursday July 1, finishing up with a total of 12,262 tonnes of cane crushed for the week ending Saturday July 3.

Cane supply manager Tony Marino said it was below budget because of some initial equipment start-up commissioning.

“Wet weather conditions through the week didn’t adversely interrupt harvesting and the CCS results have commenced above budget at 12.85,” Mr Marino said.

Mr Marino reported the highest sample was 14.88 from a rake of a plant in the Glen Isla Productivity District.

Mr Marino also warned road users in the district to use their “train brain” around the region and to be mindful of children playing near the cane rail networks in school holidays.
