With a bold but smooth bean and rustic but refined menu, a new coffee haven in the Northern Beaches is serving up the perfect blend.
New Zealand imports Dylan and Adele Lattimore moved to Mackay about five years ago with plans to work in the region for six months and save money.
Instead they built a house, got married and are the brains behind a new espresso bar dubbed The Common Room Espresso Bar based next to the Mobil service station in the expanding Northern Beaches precinct.
The grand opening is from 5.30am Tuesday and there is a little something special for anyone who drops by – one free regular coffee per customer.
The couple has worked in hospitality for years – Mr Lattimore as a chef and his wife as a barista – and it had always been their dream to run their own shop.
“It was the right space, it was the right time … in our life to be able to do it, so we just ran with it,” Mrs Lattimore said.
“We love that Moroccan, coastal aesthetic and we wanted to bring that to Mackay.”
In fact many in the region may already be familiar with Mr Lattimore’s culinary talents when he was head chef at popular city centre cafe 9th Lane Grind for the past five years.
He described his cheffing vibe as “rustic but refined”, using simple ingredients with a beautiful taste and presentation.
The dine-in menu – which can also be taken away – includes loaded toasts and bagels and acai bowls, and there will also be a grab and go cabinet featuring salads and easy breakfast options that will be switched up daily.
Their preferred coffee bean is Paradox blend sourced from the Gold Coast.
“It’s a pretty unique blend,” Mrs Lattimore said, adding there were two blends available.
“Our main blend’s flavour is very bold but smooth.”
And there was an alternative for the milk free options.
“We love it. We tried it on the GC like two years ago, and when we decided to open this place we thought of it,” Mrs Lattimore said.
The pair said the store was meant to open about four weeks earlier but Covid related delays had pushed the date back.
“We’ve just rolled with it,” Mr Lattimore said.
The Common Room Espresso Bar will open from 5.30am Tuesday until 1pm.
