MOTORISTS travelling on stretches of the Warrego, Leichhardt and Carnarvon highways may be in for a faster journey, following changes to the speed limits on these rural thoroughfares.
The changes, the second part of a State Government review of 100 roads and speed limits across Queensland, will see new signs being put up on 13 of the 42 sections of road scrutinised.
In all, six roads have had their speeds increased, three decreased and four have had adjustments made to speed zones. Results are based on public input, crash data, local knowledge and recent road upgrades.
Speed limits from Jackson to Roma and Roma to Morven and Macalister to Chinchilla on the Warrego Hwy will increase from 100km/h to 110km/h as will the stretch from Taroom to Miles on the Leichhardt Hwy and from Surat to St George in the state's south west.
The review committee has also used the opportunity to minimise the number and frequency of speed limit changes to minimise confusion for drivers. The number of speed zones on the Peak Downs highway between Calrossie Rd, Te Kowai and Walkerston has been reduced from four to one while in central Queensland the stretch from Neals Rd to Appelton Dr on the Rockhampton-Yeppoon Rd now has three zones instead of four.
There have been no changes advised for a number of roads under review despite the high number of public submissions calling for just that, including the Bruce Hwy between Caloundra and the Sunshine Motorway which failed to get the nod for a speed increase from 100km/h to 110km/h.
"Boosting consistency of speed on Queensland roads is part of our two-year, $350 million Road Safety Action Plan to drive down the road toll," said Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson.
"Queenslanders should be congratulated on maintaining a record low road toll, with 39 fewer deaths than this time last year."
The changes will come into effect by the end of the month with engineers busy assessing the final 38 roads under review.
