Logan teen racer Lincoln Evans makes Phillip Island debut driving a Porsche

Logan teen Lincoln Evans, 17, has gone from passing his P-plates to racing a Porsche 911 GT3 at Phillip Island in just one week.

Lincoln Evans has gone from passing his driving test to lining up on one of Australia’s most iconic racetracks — all in the space of a week.

The Logan 17-year-old, who only received his P-plates days ago, will make his Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge debut this weekend at Phillip Island, racing a high-powered Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Car as part of the Tyler Greenbury Racing team.

Evans, who is in Year 12 and has been racing for just over 12 months, said getting his provisional licence was more nerve-racking than facing 270km/h on the track in practice runs.

“I kind of had to drive like a grandma to pass,” he said about getting his Ps.

“Honestly, I was more nervous for the driving test than I was during practice laps.”

He started out getting his licence in a trusty Hyundai Excel but has now graduated full throttle to taking on Australia’s most up-and-coming young motorsport talents, speeding up the ranks quickly — thanks in part to hours of training on a racing simulator at home.

“All the tracks are actually laser-scanned so every bump, every kerb you can feel,” he said.

At just 16, the Cornubia racer made a name for himself last year as one of the Asia-Pacific and Oceania region’s top young drivers.

He was selected as one of the top 13 young drivers in the Asia-Pacific and Oceania region for the prestigious Ferrari Driver Academy in Malaysia, where he trained at the Sepang F1 Circuit.

He has also been part of elite driver development programs as well as the ARDC Formula 4 Pathways Program at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Adding to his impressive resumé, he secured 11th place at the World Excel Enduro Championships, proving his talent on an international stage.

This weekend he will take on the next big challenge, lining up at the Michelin Sprint Challenge at Phillip Island, Victoria.

He will be cheered on by family and friends trackside, including proud mum Amy Evans, who said her son achieved his goal with “a lot of screen time”.

The most underrated thrill ride in the world

It was that virtual seat time that helped him catch the attention of the Ferrari Driver Academy in Malaysia, where he gained international experience before being signed by Brisbane-based Tyler Greenbury Racing, founded by former karting champion Tyler Greenbury.

Evans will join a stacked grid of rising talent and experienced drivers, including New Zealand’s Tom Bewley (Team Porsche NZ), Lachlan Bloxsom (McElrea Racing), and Sonic Motor Racing’s Jake Santalucia.

Also among the Pro class is Jackson Rooney, Willie Exton, and Hunter Robb, while seasoned names such as Damien Flack and Indiran Padayachee are Pro-Am class.

“Phillip Island’s a dream track — fast, flowing, and legendary and to race here with this level of talent is surreal,” Evans said.

The teen said his ultimate goal “maybe Supercars, maybe Europe but for now, it’s about learning everything I can”.
