The government won’t rush legislation to release sealed Crime and Corruption Commission reports into former deputy premier Jackie Trad and public trustee Peter Carne, despite saying it would be a top priority for 2025.
Attorney-General Deb Frecklington has met with CCC chair Bruce Barbour to develop the legal framework to unshackle the watchdog, however, it is unknown how long Queenslanders will have to wait for hidden reports about alleged corruption to be released.
“It is important that we get this right, and it will not be rushed,” she said.
“Restoring the CCC’s reporting powers is a key legislative priority for 2025.
“We also remain committed to releasing the Trad and Carne reports as soon as possible after these reforms are enacted.”
The CCC was stripped of its reporting powers in 2023 following a High Court decision preventing the watchdog from using parliament to report on its investigations.
Acting Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the government was retesting its CCC Bill, which had been blocked by the then Labor government in September just moments before it could be debated in Parliament.
“Whether it’s the first, second, third, sitting week, we’ll work with the CCC on that to ensure that to ensure that what we had in the parliament last time is to standard,” he said.
He maintained the government could seek alternative avenues, such as using the parliamentary crime and corruption committee, to publish the Trad and Carne reports.
“The government now has the numbers on the PCCC,” he said.
“I’m not going to tell the PCCC what to do, other than to say... this LNP government was elected on a platform of transparency over this accountability, and I had said 1000 times, the Jackie Trad secret report will be released to Queenslanders.
“And if the PCCC consider that and don’t want to do that, then we will legislate.”
