A new concrete plant for Ipswich is being planned by a major Queensland construction company which will produce more than 70,000 tonnes of material a year and employ 65 workers.

A development application by Wagner Investments Pty Ltd from Toowoomba was lodged with Ipswich City Council to construct the facility on a large site in Wulkuraka.

The development will be built over three stages if approval is granted and it will be located on land owned by the company in an industrial area along busy Toongarra Road.

The proposed facility would be built on Toongarra Road in Wulkuraka.

It would take up 4.2 hectares of the 6.5 hectare site in the city’s west, about 3.5 kilometres from the CBD.

Plans include building the concrete batching plant, storage bays, workshop, a car parks and wash down bays as part of stage one.

Stages two and three will provide supporting facilities for the manufacture of pre-cast concrete products including troughs, decks and piles, as well as more storage areas and car parks.

About two thirds of the 6.5 hectare site will be developed for the concrete plant.

“The concrete batching plant will have an average throughput of 150 m3 of concrete material per day, and in excess of 72,000 tonnes of material per annum,” the application noted.

“A pre-cast and pre-stressing operation is intended for concrete manufacture. Pre-mix cement bagging is also intended to be undertaken. Steel reinforcement of concrete is also proposed to be facilitated.

“All of these operations are associated with and ancillary to the manufacturing of the concrete that will be undertaken on the site. It also provides for a diversity in the range of operations that are undertaken on the site.

“The overall throughput will be dependent on market demands, and it is unlikely that the plant will reach maximum capacity.”

It is proposed the plant would run 24 hours a day, seven days a week and employ 65 people once it is fully operational.

The application noted a large number of vehicles would be accessing the facility and a total of 90 parking spaces are planned, including 14 for concrete trucks and 68 for cars.

“A total of three access locations to the adjoining street network will also be facilitated as part of stage one,” the application noted.

“The development has been designed to ensure traffic flow on the site and surrounding road network is appropriately achieved and maintained.

“As a result, the site is provided with one entry/exit to Toongarra Road, as well as one entry/exit and two exits to Beirne Street.”

The land has mostly been cleared of vegetation and is surrounded by other industrial sites.
