A NEW shopping complex is set to open at Augustine Heights before Christmas, creating hundreds of construction and retail jobs in the region.
Ipswich City Council has approved the development application for the new Augusta Village shopping precinct to be built at the corner of Augusta Parkway and Leon Capra Drive.
Businesses tipped to feature in the Augusta Parkway shopping village include a wide range of fresh food shopping options such as produce stores, seafood, a delicatessen, a baker and a butcher.
Hair and beauty salons and alfresco dining options will also be available.
Ipswich City Council Planning and Development Committee chairman Councillor Paul Tully described the project as a real boost for the area.
"This development will be a major boost for Ipswich's eastern suburbs, with handy access from Redbank Plains, Bellbird Park and the Centenary Highway," Cr Tully said.
"The shopping centre's key retailer will be a 645sq m fresh food market.
"Retailers will vary, with suitable shop sizes for a hairdresser, bakery, bottle shop and restaurants, as well as seven outdoor dining areas included in the plans."
For the homes surrounding the complex, Cr Tully said plans were in place to ensure noise and traffic would not be an issue, including western and southern acoustic barriers.
Augustine Heights resident Dianne Hush said she was happy to have the shopping complex within walking distance of home.
"When I need to go to the shops to pick up a few things, I have to pack up my young baby and everything else I need, like my stroller into the car, and drive down to either Orion or the Redbank Plaza Shopping Centre," she said.
"I then have to battle the crowds to get a car park and then unload everything and work my way through the crowd of other shoppers just to pick up those few things.
"But with the proposed shopping village only a short stroll down the street, it will be much more convenient for me.
"When my husband and I bought our home here, we knew something like this would be coming in the future, and that is just one of the things which attracted us to this area."
Construction is expected to start in April and be finished before the end of the year.
