An Ipswich man has been sentenced for stalking and for breaking a woman’s windshield, telling her afterwards: ‘Look what you made me do’.

A young Ipswich man has returned to court for unlawfully stalking a woman after he was released on bail for the offence in December last year.

Terrek Mackinaw, 20, from Rosewood appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Friday February 4, where he pleaded guilty to a number of offences including unlawful stalking and wilful damage.

The court heard that on February 5 last year, Mackinaw damaged the windscreen of a woman’s car then turned to her and said “look what you made me do”.

He was also said to have called the woman a “s--t” and a “liar”.

Months later, on December 12, he stalked a woman in his car from Raceview to Chuwar, and back again, in the middle of the night.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Nick Turnbull said the behaviour was “alarming” and demonstrated Mackinaw’s “lack of insight”.

The young man appeared in court on December 16 last year on the stalking charge and was released on bail.

Sgt Turnbull said Mackinaw was on a trajectory to serving actual time in custody.

“Unless he gets a grasp of his behaviour, what he’s doing, and the criminal nature of it … and the insidious nature of it, he … will end up serving a period of time in custody,” Sgt Turnbull said.

The court heard Mackinaw had used drugs including ice in the past, but stopped this behaviour. He now works in the steel industry at Indooroopilly.

Acting Magistrate Geoffrey Seaholme said he had taken into account Mackinaw’s plea of guilty, the fact he was on probation at the time of committing some of the offences before the court, as well as his young age when deciding an appropriate sentence.

Mackinaw was ordered to pay $209 restitution to the woman whose windscreen he damaged.

He was disqualified from obtaining or holding a driver’s licence for two years and was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment with immediate parole.

Mr Seaholme said the form of probation Mackinaw must now comply with is “stricter” and he will return to prison if he fails to do so.

“Even though you’re young, and probably a bit immature, you cannot behave in the manner that you have been behaving,” he said.

Convictions were recorded for each offence.
