An argument about jewellery sent a father into a violent rage as he pulled necklaces from a woman’s neck, punched her, and threw her to the ground, a court has heard.

Shaquille Broome, 28, from Slacks Creek appeared in Ipswich District Court on February 2, facing two counts of assaults occasioning bodily harm.

Both offences related to an incident that occurred on December 29, 2020.

The court heard Broome attended the address of a woman and an argument about jewellery broke out between them, escalating to a point where he pulled three necklaces from around her neck.

When the woman asked him to give them back to her, he punched her and threw her to the ground.

Judge Tony Moynihan QC said the woman suffered injuries to her face and elbow as a result, which he saw pictures of.

These included lacerations to her neck, bruising to her forehead, and cuts to her elbow.

The court heard Broome made “some relevant admissions” when questioned by police.

The woman was said to have been affected mentally, as well as physically, by the incident.

Mr Moynihan took into consideration the fact that Broome had been in presentence custody for a total of 108 days, as well as his guilty pleas.

He said Broome had experienced violence himself as a child and had abused drugs in the past, but he had stayed drug-free since being released from jail mid-last year.

Broome was ultimately ordered to serve 12 months’ probation.

Convictions were recorded.
