An Ipswich man has been accused of playing a key role in the alleged kidnapping and torture of a woman, in which a court heard she was left wounded and tied to a tree.
Redbank Plains resident Conan Sol Taylor, 43, stands charged with kidnapping and torture.
Taylor made an application for bail in Ipswich District Court on December 12, 2023, after already spending over 170 days in custody on remand.
Judge Dennis Lynch said Taylor was charged as a party to the offending.
It was alleged Taylor drove a co-accused and the alleged victim to a remote location in Ipswich on December 17, 2022.
At that location, the co-offender is alleged to have threatened the victim with a knife, wounded her, and tied her to a tree.
It’s alleged Taylor then drove his co-accused away from the scene.
Defence lawyer Devyn Wanigesekera said his client intended to contest the charges.
Mr Wanigesekera said at its strongest, the evidence suggested Taylor may have known what was allegedly happening to the complainant.
He acknowledged the woman’s appearance may have been “bruised” and “bloodied,” but said there was no suggestion she had asked Taylor for help.
The court heard Taylor had previously been granted bail for the charges, but had been remanded in custody after failing to appear.
Judge Lynch said Taylor had a relevant and concerning criminal history.
He said he himself had sentenced Taylor last June for an assault occasioning bodily harm offence involving a drug debt.
He had convicted and not further punished Taylor for that offence, taking into account 588 days of presentence custody.
Judge Lynch said there was no explanation offered for Taylor’s failure to appear, and said the proposed bail address was “completely unacceptable”.
He said there was reason to believe Taylor’s girlfriend, who had offered the address for Taylor to stay with her, would not actually be residing there herself.
He denied Taylor’s bail and ordered he be remanded in custody for mention on February 20, 2024, to marry up with his co-accused’s next mention.
Lowood resident Bradley Ian Charles Bossom, 37, was sentenced to two years jail in Ipswich Magistrates Court earlier this year for his lesser role in events.
He pleaded guilty at his sentence to 24 charges including assault occasioning bodily harm and deprivation of liberty.
Holland Park resident Paige Marie Mann, 27, stands charged with eight offences in relation to the same alleged incident including torture, unlawful wounding, kidnapping, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed/in company, common assault, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed, assault occasioning bodily harm, and stealing.
Her matter is next scheduled in Ipswich District Court on February 20, 2024.
Queensland Corrective Services records show she is currently remanded at Southern Queensland Correctional Centre.
