An Ipswich mum has faced sentence in court for sharing an intimate photo of an ex-partner’s new girlfriend in what a magistrate said would have been a “humiliating and distressing” event.
Nora Ann Turner, 42, appeared in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Tuesday, July 5, where she pleaded guilty to one charge of distributing an intimate image of a woman without her consent in a way that caused her distress.
The court heard the Goodna woman committed the offence last year, sharing an intimate photo of an ex-partner’s new girlfriend.
Prosecutor Sergeant Nick Turnbull said Turner’s behaviour did seem to be “out of character”, given references provided to the court by people known to her, and a penalty in the range of a fine or period of probation would be satisfactory.
Defence solicitor Maggie Dupuis said her client shared the image with the belief an ex-partner had been unfaithful to her, but understood that was no excuse for what she did.
“She then acted out of a place of hurt and emotion, however there’s no excuse for how she behaved and (she) accepts responsibility for her behaviour,” Ms Dupuis said.
The court heard she was remorseful and embarrassed and had since apologised to both the ex-partner and the victim of her offending.
Ms Dupuis emphasised Turner, a mum of one, had pleaded guilty in a timely manner.
Magistrate Grace Kahlert said the nature of her offending was “serious” and “concerning”, also taking into account Turner’s “very good” work and character references when deciding an appropriate penalty.
“That would have been a very humiliating and distressing event for the victim of this offending,” Ms Kahlert said.
Turner was fined $1000 for the offence and no conviction was recorded.
