A young mum has faced court at 27 weeks pregnant, accused of a dangerous evening drive along the Warrego Highway, where she swerved between lanes at 20kmh with a “cocktail of drugs” in her system.
Jessica Skye Christensen, 27, pleaded guilty in Ipswich Magistrates Court on October 4, 2022, to dangerous operation of a vehicle and adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, driving under the influence, possession of dangerous drugs, possession of utensils or pipes, three failures to appear in accordance with undertaking, three counts of unlicensed driving, and driving while a relevant drug was relevant in her saliva.
The court heard Christensen was spotted by an off-duty paramedic “swerving all over the road” on the Ipswich Motorway in Redbank Plains around 6.30pm on April 29, 2021.
Christensen then drove onto the Warrego Highway at Dinmore, with an average speed of 20 to 40kmh in a 100kmh zone.
Christensen swerved between lanes, cut off other cars and came “perilously close” to crashing into the barrier at one stage.
She was intercepted by the police, who Magistrate Dennis Kinsella said found a “cocktail of drugs” in her blood – including fantasy, methamphetamine, antidepressants, a metabolite of cocaine and a metabolite of diazepam.
They also found a crystal substance, clip seal bags and a plunger in her possession.
Christensen’s licence was suspended, but she later drove on August 21, 2021, and police detected methamphetamine and MDMA in her saliva.
She once again drove without a licence on December 14, 2021, and May 7, 2022.
Defence lawyer Matthew Fairclough said Christensen was a single mother and was expecting her second child later this year.
He said Christensen had a limited criminal history, and had struggled with her mental health and drug use.
Mr Kinsella told Christensen “your offending is to my mind serious offending and is on a certain level contemptuous behaviour”.
“It’s important that people understand the seriousness of getting behind the wheel of a car when affected by drugs.”
Christensen was sentenced to two years of probation, and convictions were recorded.
She was further disqualified from driving for two years and nine months.
