A Redbank Plains mother was not paying proper attention to the road when she wiped out a motorcycle, causing lifelong injures to the rider, a court has heard.

The mum of two, Natasha Dorothy Hussey-Yeo, drove through a red light at an intersection along Warwick Ipswich Road and crashed into a motorcycle rider.

Yeo told police at the scene that she, “thought the light was green”.

However, defence lawyer Bradley Munt said Yeo’s attention had been drawn to a bus somewhere in the vicinity of the intersection.

Mr Munt said the single mum had been driving home from a friend’s house when the tragedy stuck.

The court heard it was fortunate the crash on May 22, 2021, happened near the Ipswich Hospital as the victim was able to receive immediate care by a nearby ambulance before rushed to the hospital.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Bridie O’Shea said that after making impact, the 32-year-old stopped her car and tried to go to the ride’s aid, however a number of bystanders reached the woman first.

Senior Constable O’Shea said the victim will be affected by the crash “for the rest of her days”, and at the time of sentencing was undergoing physio therapy for her leg which was badly injured in the crash.

Acting magistrate Rowan Silva said pictures following the crash showed the woman had a very large hole in her leg, and the crash had “clearly devastated her life”.

Magistrate Silva said as Yeo was a mature woman with zero traffic and criminal history the incident was out of character for the “law abiding member of the community”.

On Tuesday, July 12, Yeo pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention/reasonable care and consideration for a road user causing grievous bodily harm.

Yeo was sentenced to a 12 month community order which included 200 hours of community service.

A conviction was recorded.
