A Brassall man has been refused bail after a court heard he allegedly had sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old girl.

Chaarani Mousid, 61, was charged with carnal knowledge of a child under 16 years, Ipswich Magistrates Court heard on Friday, May 10.

The court heard the man allegedly engaged in sexual relations with the girl, causing her to give birth to a baby.

Magistrate Robert Walker said the prosecution’s case was based on DNA evidence which allegedly identified Mr Mousid as the biological father of the child.

“It’s been calculated she was 15 years old at the time of becoming pregnant,” he said.

Mr Walker said the man had previous convictions for relevant incidents when he was living in South Australia 10 years ago.

Mr Mousid had previously been sentenced to five years’ jail for indecent assault and three counts of unlawful sexual intercourse.

Police prosecutor Nanette Green said the allegations were “strikingly similar to the behaviour that he engaged in South Australia”.

She raised concerns about Mr Mousid potentially fleeing if he were granted bail.

Snr-Constable Green said Mr Mousid had previously absconded from South Australia to avoid the charges against him there, before being extradited back to SA.

Defence lawyer Kelsey Reed said she had been unable to verify that Mr Mousid had actually been extradited.

She said her client had strong ties to Queensland, including a wife, four children and a full-time job.

But Mr Walker rejected Mr Mousid’s bail due to concerns over him failing to appear.

“There is a concern that if you were to flee and return to Syria (his home country), there would be great difficulty bringing you back because of the absence of an extradition treaty between Australia and Syria,” he said.

Mr Mousid was remanded in custody. The matter was adjourned for mention on June 21.
