THE pessimist in me has learned to take a cautious approach to the clicking over of one year to the next.

Years of going into the big night with high hopes, only to come out disappointed at the end, has taught me that perhaps it's not worth making such a big deal over.

Perhaps it's the best way to cope with the fact that I spent yesterday back at work; just like any other week day, except with absolutely no traffic on the road on the way here - not even so much as a police RBT, which would have made for some company at least.

With half of Ipswich on holidays in Caloundra or Coolangatta at this time of year, it is also very hard to get so much as a phone call answered on New Year's Day.

Those who aren't living it up down the coast are sleeping off nightmarish hangovers. Which kind of confirms my theory, that if you are looking for a day to make wholesale changes to your life, it probably isn't going to eventuate on January 1.
