The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission (QRIC) has disqualified an Ipswich greyhound trainer for 15 months after they uncovered the poor living conditions of his animals.

According to QRIC documents, Ipswich local Jason Haim pleaded not guilty to six charges under the Greyhounds Australasia Rules on July 20.

The charges included three counts of failing to provide appropriate living conditions, along with one count each of failing to provide appropriate food or water, failing to comply with a QRIC order, and causing or permitting conditions likely to be dangerous to the health, welfare or safety of a greyhound.

A QRIC report revealed how evidence was gathered across multiple inspections of Mr Haim’s Ipswich property in July this year.

He had 26 greyhounds in his possession at the time, the report noted.

On July 1, inspectors observed four greyhounds housed in an unregistered and “dilapidated” trailer.

According to the QRIC report, an “unreasonable” accumulation of faeces and urine were found in and around the greyhound enclosures.

Inspectors also found seven puppies without any water, and three greyhounds with “unhygienic” water deemed “not suitable for drinking”.

The report describes the water as discoloured, with algae present in the containers.

Multiple greyhounds were also found with inadequate bedding or apparel to shield them from the overnight temperatures of 4.5C at the time.

A Stewards direction was issued to Mr Haim ordering that he correct the issues.

But during a further inspection on July 10, they found unreasonable amounts of faeces and urine in both the race kennels and an outdoor yard that was used to house seven puppies.

QRIC found Mr Haim guilty of all six offences.

The report noted Mr Haim had been a greyhound trainer for around three years.

He had a history of unsatisfactory kennel inspections in that time, for which the report noted “similar breaches were identified and lesser enforcement options were exhausted”.

“This demonstrated to the panel that Mr Haim has shown a lack of willingness to comply with his obligations as a licenced trainer within the greyhound industry; and Queensland Racing Integrity Commission,” the report states.

Mr Haim’s licence was disqualified for a total of 15 months.

He was allowed 14 days from midnight 20 July 2023 to transfer all greyhounds from his care and custody.
