Indeed Dunne weathered the early storm, but what a partnership it was between McMahon (44,58 balls) and Colbert (40 not out, 46 balls) to give the Villanova bowlers a solid score of 200 to defend – which they did.
Matthew Pereira was rewarded for keeping it tight in his first few overs when taking four wickets late in the Villanova innings. Around him, Theo Tsingos (9-0-47-3), Adam Hogan (5-0-30-1), right arm fast Alexander Bullock (9-0-33-1) and Cooper Williams (6-0-18-1) took wickets for the visitors.
But in the end 200 was a big enough score for Villanova with five-wicket-hero Henrik Frederiksen steamrolling St Patrick’s to bring about a 62-run-victory.
Frederiksen took two early wickets, then returned for a second spell where he was even more successful in taking three poles.
Joey Watson (two wickets) and Mitchell Francis (three wickets) also rose to the occasion at the bowling crease, especially Francis who took two crucial middle order wickets.
For St Patrick’s, Lewis Bullock (22), Nicholas Weedon (23) and Samuel Megaw (26) did their part with the bat.
In Banyo, Ashgrove made it two wins in a row to begin their quest for their second successive premiership. This time around, batting ace Will Nickelson was at the fore of their 146-run victory.
Ashgrove batted first and scored 216, with Nickelson’s 83 the innings of the day.
Ashgrove’s skipper hit six fours and two sixes and faced 130 balls and around him opener Frank Piper (24), Joey Laner (21) and Flynn Cleary (18) contributed nicely with the bat.
Spearheading Padua’s bowling attack was Sameer Prasad who finished with figures of 3-26 from his nine overs.
In Pursuit of Ashgrove’s total Will Webster (25) was determined however the brilliance of off-spinner Samuel Lewis once again worked wonders for Ashgrove.
In the end, Padua were cleaned up for 70, with Lewis taking five wickets in less than seven overs of action.
This followed last week’s four wicket haul from Lewis which helped Ashgrove win against Villanova.
Louis Morris (9-4-10-3) chipped in with his spin bowling as well after opening bowler Laner (5-2-15-2) removed the Padua openers for naught and one respectively.
Ashgrove’s young veterans were indeed on fire.
High praise to Benjamin de Waard (15) who stuck in there for 75 deliveries and Cameron Plackett who took two wickets for Padua.
In Ipswich, Iona were convincing nine-wicket-winners over St Edmund’s College to join Ashgrove at the top of the table.
James Turner was the magic man for Iona with four wickets on the day. Turner took wicket after wicket and went at 2.8 runs an over.
This followed his four wickets on debut just seven days earlier.
At the other end Adam Richter was applying all the pressure with a ripping spell of his own.
Richter finished with two wickets, and set tone for Clancy Muniandy to come in and reek havok late in the piece.
Muniandy bowled eight overs and in that time took four wickets, bringing an end to the St Edmund’s batting innings.
For the home side, Ryder Rundell (16), Patrick Albion (14) and Rylan McDonald scored runs.
But Iona’s bowlers were on song, restricting St Edmund’s to just 90 runs, which Liam Johns (76 not out 30 balls) chased down in a hurry.
Opening batter Johns hit a whopping 11 sixes and had the Iona First XI heading home ahead of schedule.
At Runcorn, St Peters right hand opener Liam Bahemia scored a wonderful half century in a rain-effected day of play.
St Laurence’s College on the DLS method, however Bahemia (53, 91 balls), and his opening partner James Nelson (33, 66 balls) batted excellently for the Saints.
Skipper Noah Johnson scored an unbeaten 21 and St Laurence’s bowled 26 extras, seeing the visitors to a total of 7-150.
Thomas Vaseo (two wickets), Evan Chamberlin (two wickets), Xavier Santos (two wickets) did the heavy lifting for home side St Laurence’s.
The rain bucketed down, allowing St Laurence’s just 20 overs to bat before stumps. They scored 4-48 in the 20 overs, earning them victory via the DLS method.
Austin Croll (two wickets) and Jacob Thomas (4-2-10-1) bowled their hearts out for St Peters, after some fielding brilliance from Isaac Krouse removed St Laurence’s opening batter for a diamond duck.
