The stylish top order batsman scored a glorious 112 from 141 balls on Saturday against St Laurence’s College.
AIC FIRST XI CRICKET – ROUND 1 CENTURY TOP OF THE POPS
And second player named was St Peters Lutheran College all-rounder Lars Sagorski, a Year 11 student who would watch or play the game 24 hours a day if he could. He had a stunning debut with four wickets and 33.
So who joined them in the side?
THE TEAM
1. Joshua Ritchie (Iona)
Year 11 student Joshua Ritchie hit 14 fours and one six across his innings for Iona as he amassed a First XI debut score of 112. The Wynnum Manly junior twice scored 10A hundreds last season, but this innings took the cake.

2. Liam Carter (Iona)
Lost in the storm of praise heaped upon Ritchie was that his opening partner, Liam Carter, scored 70 and shared in an opening partnership that ensured Iona were in a winning position before lunch. He set the tempo of his innings during his 77 ball knock.
3. Noah Johnson (St Peters)
Johnson was the batting mainstay for Saints. His enterprising innings lasted just 99 balls, but his success was hard earned as he had to do plenty of running in the heat, churning up and down the wicket to pinch singles, twos and threes. It was a very good knock by the youngster.
4. Harley Malpass (Iona)
No surprise that Malpass was among the runs. He started the season in sparkling touch, scoring 61 (59 balls) and maintained the momentum of the innings after Liam Carter had let fly at the top of the order.
5. Zac Joyce (Villanova)
In a collapsing innings Joyce scored 46 from 61 balls which followed his impressive bowling effort when he claimed 2-21 (10 overs). It was an outstanding all around effort.
6. Joey Laner (Marist)
Villanova challenged Ashgrove long and hard, but Marist were able to work their way to a winning score after Laner showed his teammates the door leading to a 200-run plus total. He worked for his 64 (88 balls) and as a bonus also bowled 4-0-10-1. Laner was also involved in a run out.
7. Louis Morris (Marist)
Morris was a rolled-gold performer in round one, with his tight, controlled spin pinning Villa to the centre wicket, while also stealing two wickets. He bowled 8-2-13-2 – after scoring a dashing 47 not out (27 balls).
8. Lars Sagorski (St Peters)
With his spin he took 4-22 in St Peters win over St Edmund’s and also scored 33. A cricket lover who has captained the 7As 8As 9As and 10As, Sagorski could not have had a better debut.
9. Austin Tsingos (St Patrick’s)
Austin Tsingos claimed three of the top seven wickets, and finished with a remarkable 3-3 which gave his side a down payment on victory. His brother Theo also played an important innings and is recognised later in this story.
10. Sam Lewis (Ashgrove)
He has started the season where he left off last year. Lewis was top of the pops for Marist, with his 4-23 strangling Villanova during a 9.3 over stint at the bowling crease. His haul included Villa’s top scorer, Joyce.
11. Henrik Frederiksen (Villanova)
With support from Lachlan Colbert, Frederiksen owned the morning session on his way to two wickets, and finished with 3-40. He also showed plenty of fight to score 21 and it is little wonder we named him in our Taverners Queensland Team of the Season.
12. Sam Morris (St Edmund’s)
Year 11 student Morris claimed 4-30 in an heroic effort to keep his side in the match after Noah Johnson had sent St Peters hurtling toward 200. It was a grand effort by the Brothers Ipswich junior, a bowling effort that showed plenty of fight.
13th man: James Turner (Iona)
The baby of the competition, Year 10 leg spinner Turner claimed 4-47, delivering a confidence boosting haul. He had been bowling well throughout our trials and would have learned a lot in his First XI debut.
Special mentions
Evan Chamberlin (St Laurence’s).
Well played Evan Chamberlin. The Laurie’s innings was creaking and swaying when he came to the crease, counterattacking with a quick 51 (43 balls) that should give him confidence in the weeks ahead.
Hugo Kelly (St Peters)
Kelly bowled superbly for Saints, taking three top order wickets during a tight six over spell that yielded just 11 runs.
Nicholas Bragger (Iona)
An unlucky omission from the Team of the Week after he scored 59 from just 23 balls. Bragger hit six sixes as Iona’s innings ballooned beyond 300.
Patrick Albion (St Edmund’s College)
Albion batted beautifully against St Peters, fluently getting to 40 not out. He faced just 57 balls during his unbeaten knock.
Theo Tsingos (St Patrick’s)
Theo Tsingos had a good start to the season taking 1-11 and scoring an important 27 not out after Padua bowlers Ryan Out (2-15, 10 overs), Will Webster and Will Tozer had given their rivals a fright. Theo Tsingos’ teammate Alexander Bullock also deserves a mention because he claimed two wickets with the new ball, including Padua danger man Will Tozer who can win a match on his own.
Will Webster and Ryan Out (Padua)
Will Webster challenged for well over an hour with 27 against St Patrick’s, and also took 2-8. Let us also acknowledge Ryan Out for his 2-15 from 10 overs. There were not too many better bowling performances from that in round 1.
Xavier Santos (St Laurence’s College)
He has had better weekends, but on a day when runs flowed at more than six an hour, Santos held it together at the bowling crease (10 overs, 0-43) and scored 21. He deserves a mention.
