A MAJOR sports reserve is planned for the former Bremer State High School site, linking the school's old sports ovals to the nearby soccer fields at Jim Donald Memorial Park and a green corridor.

Under a $10 million project, council will transform the 16ha Silkstone site into a sports precinct and recreational area with a boardwalk and picnic shelters around a wetlands area, named Jim Donald Parklands.

Council purchased the former school site late in 2011.

The remainder of the school site on the corner of Grange and Blackstone roads is marked as a future development area planned as a massive commercial and residential development.

The former school sports fields will be developed into two ovals or four multi-use rectangular fields with a split level clubhouse, dug-out shelters around the fields and field lighting.

Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee chairman David Morrison said the council had received expressions of interest from church soccer and Brothers Rugby League Club for the new fields.

"When we do studies of sporting facilities and open space facilities, there was always a gap within that Silkstone area and this will certainly fulfil that gap," Cr Morrison said.

Council is expected to endorse the preliminary draft master plan for Jim Donald Parklands at next week's meeting to go out for public comment.

The preliminary plans include boardwalks and a lookout, decks and interpretive signage around the wetlands, two picnic areas constructed around the wetlands and at the Robertson Rd end of the site, picnic shelters, open spaces, the existing playground, concrete pathway connections throughout the parklands and more than 500 car park spaces.

Local councillor Andrew Antoniolli said the draft master plan for the site was an exciting proposal for the community.

"It really improves an area that has been just an open drain and transforms it into a wetlands experience that will attract birdlife and a good environmental outcome and become a great space for families," Cr Antoniolli said.

As part of the project a sediment basin and a harvesting pond to irrigate the sports fields will help remove nutrients and pollutants from the wetlands.
