Up to 60 Kilkivan residents will finally receive their Covid vaccination, with a pop-up vaccination clinic opening at 9am on Tuesday.

Kilkivan and District Community Care Association Inc president Rosie Fitzgerald said the clinic, operated by outreach service Sunny Street, involved two nurses who will administer the Pfizer and the AstraZeneca vaccine to about 60 people on Tuesday.

“I would imagine it’s likely older people, although given the Pfizer vaccine is coming perhaps some of the younger ones have registered too,” she said.

She also said the clinic was a one day event, and will only return after the appropriate time frame to give a second dose of the vaccine.

The clinic is the result of Ms Fitzgerald and the Kilkivan and District Community Care Association campaigning for change in the community, due to a lack of public transport and an ageing population.

“Previously, there’s been no clinic here for Covid shots,” she said.

“There’s no public transport available in Kilkivan, so people who have restricted licences or who don’t drive anymore have no way of getting to other towns unless they rely on family or friends.”

She said at one point the Community Care Association was considering hiring a bus to take Kilkivan residents to Gympie to receive their jab, but the Primary Health Network suggested bringing the vaccine to Kilkivan instead.

Ms Fitzgerald said she felt the opening of the clinic was amazing for the Kilkivan community.

“I think it’s a fantastic boost to our circumstances,” she said.

While the venue was not publicly disclosed, Ms Fitzgerald said those who registered for a vaccine would be informed as soon as possible.

Sunny Street are also no longer taking registrations, and the clinic will open at 9am on Tuesday, July 27.
