A Gympie five-year-old who burst into tears when he discovered his new scooter had been brutally stolen and destroyed by a group of teenagers has been given a special surprise from a generous stranger.

Coby Richardson was playing at the Tin Can Bay skatepark with his cousins on the July school holidays when he was interrogated by a gang of teenagers who later took his scooter and broke it apart.

When The Gympie Times posted an article about the heartless incident, it caught the attention of a Biloela man, who couldn’t help but reach out the family and offer a voucher.

Single dad Michael Miguel-Sanchez has raised his two boys for the last 13 years and said he knows exactly what Gympie mum Bianca Richardson is going through.

“I’ve literally been in her position,” Mr Miguel-Sanchez said.

“Saving hard, getting a scooter for my boys only to have it stolen not too long after.

“I’m now in a much more fortunate position in my life where I don’t have to struggle as I did in the past.”

Mr Miguel-Sanchez reached out to Coby’s mum Bianca Richardson and offered the $400 voucher because he thought it was the “right thing to do”.

“Her son learned too early that there are people in the community that will do the wrong thing,” he said.

“I guess I want him to know that there are also people in the community who are willing to help others they don’t know.”

Mr Miguel-Sanchez said he was happy to see others also supporting the Richardson family by offering to help out.

“Ultimately in life if we can help put a smile back on the face of a 5 year-old, I reckon we should, so I did,” he said.

Coby now has a $400 gift certificate to use at the Scooter Hut online store to pick out a replacement scooter.

Ms Richardson said she was “overwhelmed” by the response to her story and was brought to tears by Mr Mr Miguel-Sanchez’s generous gesture.

“My heart had been warmed and it's nice to know that there really are some kind and generous people out there,” Ms Richardson said.

“I didn't want to accept the voucher out of pride but I swallowed it and it has made Coby a very happy little boy to be able to pick out a brand new scooter and helmet.”
