One of Gympie’s most fearless 11-year-olds is taking on the world rodeo circuit, holding on and not being bucked off.
Chase Wieland of Bells Bridge started mini bull riding four years ago. He has taken the Australian junior bull riding scene by storm, winning the Australian title in 2021 and 2022.

Winning the Professional Bull Riding Can AM Academy Junior 2022 Championships in Rockhampton on New Year’s Eve earned Chase a berth in the world finals in Texas, USA, in May 2023.
This will be his first time in the United States, where he dreams of competing when he grows up.

The championship will be “huge,” and he is “excited” to go.
Chase’s mum, Bec Wieland, thinks he has a good chance of winning.
“We’re hoping for a world title,” she said.
Apart from regular 11-year-old exercises like running and riding bikes, Chase rides his mechanical bull at least once a day under the watchful eye of his dad and coach, Malcolm Wieland.
“It’s scary seeing someone you are related to in the rodeo. I’m always happy when I see he is safe,” Mrs Wieland says.
Despite the risk of bull riding, Chase enjoys being a kid and getting the opportunity to travel around Australia and the world doing something he loves.
